I replaced the one on my '88 H-200 with the 4.3 V-6...you have to get to both bolts which are basically are the rear of the engine block and they thread up into the block from the bottom...the challenge is to hold up the starter while trying to remove the bolts same when installing...I was able to get one arm up under there and work with the other hand...if you can't do that you might try tying a rope around the starter to hold it up...put a board across the gunnels and tie the other end of the rope to it so it holds the starter while you try to get the bolts out...
BTW...disconnect the batt neg cable before doing this...and take a digital pic of how the wires are connected to the soleniod...

to install reverse this procedure...tie the starter up with the rope and then start the bolts by hand...make sure you do not cross thread them...it would be a beast of a job if you stripped a bolt or broke one off...

Mind came with a couple of shims but the one in there had none so that's how I installed it....2 seasons and it's been fine...I got an MES starter from a local shop....brand new...5 year warrantee....

I can get at the two bolts. It is exactly as you described. They are just FROZEN in place. I can get my ratchet there, but very little room and thing is by the time I am stretched and in there, really do not have the ability to put too much strength into it.

I sprayed some PB on it and let it sit overnight and did it again.

Maybe I need a real long ratchet???

A breaker bar might work, or slip a piece of pipe over the handle to get some leverage on the ratchet, PB is good stuff it should work.

I used a long 1/2 in drive ratchet...they came out with no problem...and my boat is much older and used in salt water all season...so you should be able to get them out.....

I think that is my issue. Ratchet is your normal length. I can get it on the bolt but can't get any leverage. Picked up the new starter and I see what you mean about holding it I
place as it is quite heavy.

Another thing you could possibly do to hold the heavy starter in position whilst bolting it in place is to use a length of threaded bar lightly screwed into one bolt hole (or 2 lengths of bar/ both bolt holes to get the positioning absolutely right). Slide the starter up onto the threaded bar(s) and hold the starter in place using a nut/ nuts. Then replace the threaded bar(s) with the bolts This could possibly also be done when removing the bolts/ starter in the first place.

I get what you are saying Graham. I just need to get it out first! I guess I should be happy I can get to it (after taking apart the cover and battery compartment).

Sometimes slightly tightening a seized bolt will break the join, allowing it then to be unscrewed.

Can you get an impact gun in there? (Every project deserves a new tool.)

Honestly as long as you can get a good long ratchet with a 6 point socket to not round off the bolts you should not have trouble getting them out...mine came right out and my boat was 19 years old then!

Friend of mine (auto mechanic) helped and the new starter is in.

Note to others, make sure the new starter comes with the bolts, the old ones will not work (at least in my case they did not).
