Installed my new (bigger) bilge bump and a float (old system was manual only).

While under the engine I noticed "duct tape" on a black arm. See the photos. The previous owner had obviously done this.

What does this black arm do and why would someone put duct tape there? It does not appear to connect to anything just rests between the two red pipes that are connected to the rubber hoses.

Edit: Yikes my bildge looks DIRTY! ok new project!

Well that is the bracket for your seawater pump. You have to take that off in order to change the impeller located in that housing. Whoever took it off the last time probably lost the rubber piece that goes on the end to help with the vibration of that pump. So duct tape to the rescue.

I did not want to take the duct tape off without checking. I did think it looked like it was wrapped around the end going no where.

Any idea what that rubber part is called so I can get one?

I believe it's called a gizmo.

Call Doug Russell, they'll be able to fix you up. It would also be the perfect time to change your impeller if it hasn't been done recently.

Thanks guys. Yes #5. My gosh its $8 why did they put duct tape??

Impeller was done not to long ago by the previous owner (I bought it in July). I will probably go ahead and do it again since I am not sure when he did it.

That bracket keeps the whole pump assembly from trying to rotate with the crank. The rubber doo-hickie is to isolate the the bracket between the two hose nipples. If someone had lost the original isolator, the duct-tape wrapping would be a reasonable (well, redneck-reasonable) quick fix.

They do drop off fairly easily, and if you have a black VP engine, then they are difficult to spot ( I know from experience on my previous 1999 boat!). If you do buy a new one, I recommend you glue it onto the metal bracket like I did, they have never fallen off again.
