Hi Folks,
I've been on the fence for getting back into boating for many months now. I have my eyes on a 2003 Horizon 220 with just over 300 hours on it. It's in great shape and needs absolutely no reconditioning.

If has the 5.0 GSi/SX Volvo Penta set-up.

What would be "fair" market value. Bluntly, what would you offer the dealer for it and expect the offer to be accepted?

Really depends on your local market conditions and what kind of shape the boat is in.

Has it been maintained? What's the damage on it?

What is the current book value -- as if you are financing, there may be some binding ties to what a bank will loan you.

Boat has the records (and manuals) with it and it's clearly been maintained. Asking price is $3500 higher than NADA blue book value. Other than a couple minor scuffs near the rub rail, there's nothing to ding the boat for. I'd give it a 9/10 for condition. The boat was always dry racked and has never been stored in the water. However, it's also the middle of winter and the economy sucks which factor into this as well.

It's my understanding that some dealers use the ABOS to get a boat's value but you have to have an account so I can't use it.

With the 5.0L SX drive, no more than $15,995 is what I would consider fair. Have seen several 2003's with 5.7L DP and less hours from $16,995 to $19,995 for comparison.
Personally, I would prefer the larger engine and DP drive in that boat.

Good Luck.

Thanks, my thinking is along the same as yours. I'm looking for things to back up my offer. Although the 5.7 may be the preferred package for most, the 5.0 works perfect for our uses. Occasional tubing and mostly cruising from one sandbar to the next or between town docks is how we typically use the boat.

I agree completely with Cap'n Morgan--especially in terms of the power package. I would much prefer the 5.7. That said, I think it is important to take NADA for what it is. They base their pricing on average condition. The agerage boat owner (none of us on this blog) uses their boat hard and doesn't necessarily baby it the way many of us probably do. So my point is that a boat in exceptional condition my be able to command a bit more than NADA based on the fact that "average condition" may not be great condition.

Any interest in a 2006 Chaparral 190SSi w/220 hp 4.3L V6, trailer, bimini, covers, 160 hours for $14,995 ? Condition = Clean White/Yellow hull colors. Just saw one listed in our area this morning, so I thought I would throw it out there.

UPDATE:(12/17/09) This boat sold already, same day it was listed, for $14,000 even.

It would cost me $600+ in fuel and tolls alone to drive and pick it up. I'm in Maine.

Still a good deal IMO, and I had no idea of your location. Sorry.

In Seattle, that's easily a 19,995 boat... and it'd sell. Definitely not in the 20's.

If you can get them to 15-16k - you are probably doing quite well. Especially if it's in as good of shape as you describe.

What's it listed for?

It's listed for $19895. NADA has it as $15,665 I think 20K is certainly too high and not what I'd pay. It has a bimini and the forward and cockpit covers, no other adds. It's going to depend on how quickly they want to get rid of the boat.

If the power on it works for you, it's in good condition, and you like it--offer $15-16K for it. If you live in Maine--I doubt they are selling many boats in December. They might just go for it. You've got noting to lose. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Never hurts to put it out there. You'll find out what their lowest number is... You can always come back if you decide that it's the right boat at the right price...

I agree with all above… I would say $17000 at top…. 5.0 and SX (single prop) is not an attractive part of this boat and you can bargain with it. Also it is a 03 boat which is 7 years old so I would not buy it unless you get a sea trial or get survey with pro……or use it as a bargain tool as well. It is tough to do it in winter time…

Have you taken a ride in the boat...if not please do. IMO that boat needs the DP with the 5.0 or the 5.7 with an SX drive. I have A LOT of seat time in that model. This is just my opinion as I said. But to me it is underpowered.

As for price. $15,500 your top, then walk. Watch them call you back before the end of January to sell you the boat.
