Is it normal that my new 2007 horizon has sterring that makes clicking sounds?? The steering fluid is right topped up and it only has 18 hrs on the boat. Only been out three times! Any answers??

Need some more info. Does it click as you turn the wheel? Does it click only at the extremes of it limits?

Coming from the helm or from the stern area?

Mine has a problem with binding at the right side of the helm where the cable makes the turn. It creaks & groans as you feel the resistance in the wheel. No one has been able to do anything to alleviate it so far. This is the only issue my boat has had that hasn't been taken care of right away.

thanks for the replies!

It clicks from the helm area as I turn the wheel and does it without being at its extremities. I thought it was power steering but could also be rack and pinion?? I will check my owners manual. D

It's power steering, but the linkage between the wheel and the mechanicals at the back of the boat is via a jacketed cable (like a speedometer cable - except much larger diameter - if you're familiar with those). The cable leaves the steering shaft assembly to the right of the helm, then enters a hole below the gunwhale and makes a 90 degree turn to go to the back of the boat. It's where it makes that turn that sometimes is a problem. Sometimes it's trying to make the turn too tightly. Of course, it's always possible that you've got an issue in the rack assembly behind the wheel.

Interesting, it sounds like a similar issue my new 2005 Horizon 230 exhibted last season. We boated throughout the season with no issues and then had the dealer repair under warranty this past winter. It appears that they replaced the steering linkage/cable which fixed the problem... no more clicking.
