Post subject: | Prop Wont Free Spin |
I have a 2000 model 180 horizon and I can not get my prop to free spin nor will it shift into forward or reverse. I have just replaced the lower unit and before installed the lower spun freely. I guess what I am asking is there something that needs to be done after winter to it like lube or re-oil something. This is my first boat and second year owning it so I am not to quick on these things. Also I have yet to try to start the boat and then shift into gear so not sure if that matters either. Thank again for your support in advance until I get my sig updated: 2000 180 horizon volvo penta 3.0 with sx drive |

Sounds like you have the linkage mis-adjusted and it is in gear, |

Is there a simple fix or should I take it somewhere |

I would pull the lower unit, willing to bet you have an arm rotated too much on a spline. When you pull the unit see if you can spin the drive shaft. |

It does sound like it is in forward or reverse gear already On the VP SX if it is in gear turning the prop/ propshaft will also try to turn the drive input shaft. i.e. turn over the engine. When refitting a lower unit on a SX/ DPS, the splines on the upper/ lower coupling either line up or don't, there is no special setting. Graham |

will the motor turn over if it is in gear? The battery is dead but I tried to turn it over and it wanted to but acted like there wasnt enough juice. |

There's a microswitch in the shifter mechanism that (normally) prevents the motor being started in gear. However, if the shifter is in neutral but the shift cable is adjusted at the outdrive end so the drive is actually in gear when the shifter is in neutral, the starter will operate. If you take the plastic cover off the outdrive ( 3 bolts) you'll see the shift mechanism. In neutral, the upper lever, attached to the upper gearbox by a bolt, should be horizontal. Graham |
