This is my 3rd year boating and this has never happened.

we took the boat out Sunday for the first time this year. we let the boat warm up for a while and took it out, while under way at low wake speed the Alarm came on ( that alarm that goes on when you try to start the boat ) I checked all the gauges and they were all fine. continued to go at wake speed and the alarm shut off after about 30 seconds to a minute.. about 5 minutes later we went out and got it up on plane and drove for about 15 minutes at about 25-30 mph with nothing else and all gauges were OK. stopped with the boat at idol took some pictures and turned around and came back. doing about 25mph on the way back the alarm came on again after about 5 minutes on plane. checked all the gauges again and nothing out of normal. it went off again after about 10-15 seconds. drove another 10 min to the dock and nothing else happened.

with all the wisdom on this board can anybody help me? is there something i should look for? the manual says it would be low oil pressue or low water pressuere. but all the gagues were at the usual spot with no dipping or peaking. the water temp was 50 would that make a differance? it was the first run of the year. could it just be getting the winter junk worked out???

When was the last time the impeller was changed? Same question for thermostat.

Does your drive have a reservoir under the engine cover? If so, check the level of the drive lube.

I bought it in 2009 it was a 2007 hold over. so it has had 1 year in the water and 2 years in the show room, i hope the impeller isn't shot all ready, but you never know i guess.

as for the reservoir i will check tonight but i don't recall seeing one. it is the volvo penta V8 5.0L carb 220hp

Volvo drives don't have a lube bottle in the engine compartment..... it will not be drive lube making the alarm go off, it's not monitored. Sounds like you have an alarm sensor "wigging out".

I cracked a plastic tank on one of my outdrives in my old Scarab, pumped my outdrive dry into my bilge, that was a 4k bill and shortly after that she went up for sale.

Yes it will be time for a new impeller, even if it's not the problem sounding the horn.

Volvo recommends you change the rubber impeller every 50 hours, And with yours being 3 years old now even with it just sitting for 2 years will let the rubber impeller take a set and not pump the water pressure that it should.

I believe your engine should also have temperature sensors that would be located on the top of the exhaust manifold risers, They can be pretty sensitive sometimes, And can set off the horn due to an improper working impeller from lack of good water flow, or a clogged up exhaust manifold.

Next time the horn goes off, carefully see if the exhaust manifolds feel hot to where you can not hold your hand on them.

Good luck I hope you find it.

Did you check the oil level? Seems like while up on place maybe the oil was not covering the sensor and causing an opnen on the circuit.
