Sounds like the U-joints and/or Gimball bearing which means that you have a tear in the bellow.

Ujoints from Volvo dealer are $390
Gimball is $36
Bellow is $40? forget the price

Plus install unless you can do it yourself.

The U/Js are actualy replaceable; it's just that VP will not supply the U/Js on their own anymore. I changed them on my 1999 boat, just like doing it on a propshaft. External snap rings act as retainers on earlier ones ( as on my 1999 boat), proper internal circlips on the later ones (at least up to 2004). maybe much later ones are staked in like they are on some props.

Aftermarket U/Js may still be available.

I agree Graham, and Volvo sells as a kit. I am sure I am paying for more than was needed, but am biting the bullet and hopefully can maintain on my own from now on. I think the u joints are obtained elsewhere(just not Volvo ones).

The Volvo kit is the whole input shaft assembly. I think you are doing the right thing; getting it mended as quickly as possible and back on the water, rather than spending all Summer searching for replacement U/Js to save a few Dollars!

As a matter of interest, what was it that was seized, preventing the drive from being removed?

A tear in the bellows is one potential cause. There are others, like lack of maintenance.

.............and tilting the drive too high when the engine is running, putting a lot of strain on the U/Js.

I just bought it used last summer and did some catch up maintenance and Mike had said to do the gimball and bellow which was my plan the start of this season.

I should have tackeled it then, but was using it still learning the boat.

Guess it was needed sooner. I will say, I bet the gimball was never greased! The zerk is impossible to get a gun on. Going to relocate as the marina had to unhook it to try and access. Have not seen it yet. Going today.
