Post subject:  Fuel Warning and Temp Warning Gauge Malfunction

I've got a '98 Horizon 240 with 494 hours on it. Was out last weekend and had the fuel low warning come on about 5 times. I had a full tank so I know low fuel wasn't a problem. It seemed to mostly happen when pulling a kneeboarder where the bow was up a good bit, but did happen a few times at plane.

Curiously, each time the fuel warning beep and light went off, not only did the fuel gauge drop to empty, but the temp gauge went to the red zone and stayed there till the warning went off, then came back down to normal operating temp. In most cases the warning lasted 30 seconds or so, then went off on it's own and the fuel and temp gauges would return to where they were before.

Any ideas as to the culprit? Fuel gauge sending unit? Bad VDO cluster? Loose connection?

Thanks in advance for the help.

My guess would be a bad connection, first port of call the multi pin connector to the dash, also the ground connection(s).

The VDO clusters are known for getting flakey after a while. Some have success with improving the ground, but the only 100% fix is to replace the cluster.

Search VDO. Start with ground and happy shopping for a new unit. Watch ebay.
