Just picked up a 1995 H240 with the 7.4L King Cobra.

Engine is in excellent condition 613 hours.
Out drive looks good..... Mechanic says it's good to go.
Hull is really good
Upholstery needs work.... and there is one bad spot in front of the ski locker and the beginning of the fiberglass bow floor. All other parts of the floors are good.

NO DANG WINDSHIELD! it got busted up when a boat lift didn't stop. *anyone know where i can pick up a windshield? I've got the front pieces. They look ok, but i need to spend some time with them.

4 Tires separated on me during the drive from Austin to Conroe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL 500$ latter i got home at 12:30am....

Trailer is really nice. We were able to get it for 6000. the interior rips are all in the seams. OOOO and the engine cover damn near blew off 2 minutes into the trip home. the wood was very bad, and needed rebuild but now its pretty messed up..... I even asked if i need to strap that thing down...

Are Bimini tops hard to find for these things?

What about a wake board tower?

Thanks!
See y'all around
Jay

I'm hoping that the King Cobra you have is the joint venture with Volvo one and not the pure OMC cone clutch one....by the boat's year it should be...
The bad spot you are referring to...this is wood rot and you need to cut out as much of the rotted wood as you can...the treat any new wood you install with CPES (thinned epoxy)...wood rot spreads because of the rot spores so you also want to treat the surronding areas...the solvents in it are REALLY strong so use a good 3 M fume respirator...gloves..goggles...
I'd probably want to remove the seats...rip out the carpet...inspect the whole deck and repair any suspect areas...then coat the deck in Durabak or similar....get rid of the carpet it does nothing but cause rot...and when reinstalling the seats put 3M 4200 on each screw to seal out moisture...

see
http://www.rotdoc.com

my one bad spot turned into a deck replacement and stringer repair....now the boat is solid as a rock but man o man was it a lot of work....

Bimini tops are easy to find...I put a Taylor Made 6' long 46" high one on my '88 200...I used the slider mounts inside of the gunnels on the coaming panels so I can slide the top foward and back for more room when fishing...

The windshield....it depends on the supplier...unfortunately Taylor Made does not stock them for a long time...but Water Bonnet does...I got glass for mine when it was 17 years old...see if you can find a label or trademark on the glass that you have...I was able to e-mail FW and they told me how to find out who made it and I got in touch with Water Bonnet and bought the glass directly from them...installed it myself...

LOC THANKS!

This is my first boat... I'm a engine guy, and the 454 sounds wonderful! I don't know anything about outdrives but it doesn't make any noise. The lash in the lower unit 'feels' good.

How would i know if i had the OMC/Volvo drive?

I've heard that these units are pretty much bullet proof, but when something goes wrong (not IF) the parts are impossible. That being said. Since i have the 454 BB chevy that the swap to a bravo 3 isn't to involved.

I've heard there is a 4500 rev limiter. Is that there to save the drive or the engine...?

It looks like there are many billet parts in the drive.

THanks for the rotdoc site i'll look it over now.

Jay

One more thing.. If i ditch the carpeting, what should i coat the wood with?

Should i just get the floor fiberglassed in? Can't imagine how much that cost's.

Thanks
Jay

This all gets a bit confusing...there were basically 3 variants of the OMC Cobra/King Cobra--

1) standard Cobra (dog clutch shift)...1986-1993, used with 4 cyl, V-6, V-8..some of the V-8 models were called Kings when they came with thru the hull exhaust but the drive was a standard Cobra
2) 460 Ford/King....made 87-89...(dog clutch shift) had the same upper unit as the standard but a bigger V-8 OMC outboard lower unit...hard to get lowers and couplers and exhaust manifolds for that model...
3) 454 King cone clutch/Chevy 454 and some Ford 5.8s...made 90-95...this drive was completely different than the standard Cobra...much bigger...cone clutch shifting but with the impeller still in the upper gear housing like the standard Cobra...very rare real hard to get parts for...

Joint Ventures...
OMC and Volvo went into a joint venture around 1994 and the new product was sold as the OMC Cobra and the Volvo Cobra SX...they were indentical and used modifed OMC castings in the transom mount but used Volvo style cone clutch shifting...these stated in 1994 and were sold as OMCs till 98 when Volvo bought out OMC sterndrive and continued to sell the same drive as the Volvo SX until about 2006 when it was re-designed.

You can tell if you have the joint venture one (much easier to get parts because it's the same as the Volvo) if it has an engine mounted raw water pump (not the big automotive pump on the front of the engine but a smaller one that is either mounted in the crankshaft pulley or mounted at the lower front left side of the engine and run off a belt then that's good news it's the Volvo/OMC.....if you don't have an engine mounted impeller....then its the super rare OMC cone clutch...

The floor (deck)...it depends on what you want to do...if you just want to go boating then fix the spot and you can put the carpet back down temporarly to run the boat for the summer...but if you are going to keep it a long time....I'd plan to rip up the carpet...really fix the bad spots...then see about getting it covered in durabak or other marine anti skid coating...that's about the best you can do...if the floor is carpeted...it may be glassed underneath you don't have to re-glass the whole thing unless you want to ....gelcoating takes some skill for it to come out right...most people with a 15 year old boat will fix the bad spot...coat it well with resin...and put the carpet back and go boating...
I did that first...then found more rot (real bad) under the rear seats and wound up doing the whole thing a few years later...

THanks Lou,

It says 7.4 OMC Cobra GL. If i google that it says the GL is a OMC/Volvo.

I'll inspect the rawwater pump in the morning!

A buddy was talking about white truck bed non skid. But if they make special boating grade stuff that would seal that would be the ticket. Then make some snap in carpets...

My old boat was a 96 model.....the full carpeting is actually nice and easy on the bare-hoofs...as mentioned though it will tend to cause floor rot with wood flooring - mine lasted from 96 to 2010 though before issues occurred and it was in an area with no carpeting (rear storage area).

You will need to remove the carpeting on the floor - cut out the rot (beyond the rot actually) and replace.....as mentioned you will want to coat the replacement wood with resin (edges too) then glass the edged back in. Also, if the remaining wood decking is good (make sure good so don't have more probs) I would hit it all with a sander and slop on new resin over the entire deck.

Then you are good as new and have new carpeting installed....like i said mine lasted 15 years, but I kept stored inside under cover and avoided water in the boat when possible....vacumm clean and dont hit with water hose to clean the carpet. An occasional dousing from a rain or rogue wave:) is fine just don't put her up wet.

i will do that, i think i'm going to "support it with a piece that goes all the way from one side of the boat to the other to spread the load. Then in the winter, i'll dig it all out, coat the patches and re-coat the rest of the floor.

**I went and looked at the engine just now. The acc belts drive the Alt, Hyd steering pump and the water pump. The water pump looks like a regular old automotive pump. I'll get pics later.

+1 for CPES & Rot Doctor. That stuff's a miracle.

Is it a good idea to put remove all panels and coat the backs with more resin?

From what i'm seeing i have the Cone OMC king cobra... Look like it would be called a SX if it was the OMC/Volvo setup.
