Hey all,
I've read the million posts on proper prop selection but just thought I would throw the subject out again.
Did a little prop testing last night:

39.8 Miles per hour WOT (GPS)
4900 rpm (dash gauge - I think I was hitting the rev limiter as I should be 4600 - 4800)
Full load (4 people & full gas tank 34gal & gear)
4.3 carbed 190HP
I have the stock 19" x 14.25 aluminum prop (I think it is the Merc Black Max).

Anyone out there have the new '06 190 with the factory stainless prop? Just wondering what it was.

Around here everyone likes the Merc High 5 and I was thinking a 21" high five might be a good choice.

I mostly use it for tubing, cruising and hope to try skiing .

Any opinions?

Had the High Five on my last boat, loved it.

Leviticaus,

I do not have a stainless steel prop, but my dealer when setting up the 2006 190s with the VP 4.3 GXis, has changed all the stock alumin props he delivered on the boats to 21 pitch.

I think this is to keep the WOT within the published max RPM range. I find there is still plenty of power out of the hole.

Was out tubing yesterday with the kids. Pulls like a dream compared to our very old underpowered outboard.

I found on the boat's speedometer top ends ranging from 47 to 52 MPH depending on loading and lake conditions.

The dealer did comment that he water tested an identical model to mine with a stainless. Not sure of the pitch, but they said they got 58-60 mph out of it.

what rpm were you getting at top end? my VP GL 4.3 190 came with a 14.25x23 prop and i have been thinking about putting on a 21p but was concerned about max rpm.

190 dave,

I think I am running WOT at 4500 rpm (might be 4600?). I will pay closer attention when I am out later in the week, and report back.

190 Dave

Had the boat out on the lake tonight. WOT is 4600 almost 4700 RPM. The posted WOT range on the engine cover states for the VP 4.3GXi is 4400-4800 RPM.

This is with a 21 pitch volvo aluminum.

190 Dave,

I am not sure what the gear ratio is? Where is the quickest way to find it or look it up? Should it be stamped on the drive somewhere? Or do I go to the volvo owners manual, which I think is the same one you have as it covers all the power options. I am at work now, but I can check tonight.

it should be on the outdrive label there are i think 3 different ratios available.

1.79:1
1.85:1
1.89:1

fyi
tried the volvo 21" alu prop last night increased rpm to 4500 from 4100 top speed was slightly faster 46-47 mph

the big gain though was the holeshot, the boat lept out of the water compared to the 23" prop, this will be a much better prop for watersports......

thanks again for all the info everyone.
