Well driving to torch lake the other day I look in rear view mirror and hatch is blown open, ball ends ripped off gas springs. Well now I think the shocks may be ok but the ends are wasted. Question is lid was hard to open and didnt stay open real good. The lb on them is 60lb should i replace with same or go up to 80lb? and if i go up, will the lid just pop open?

aploss, I'd go with 80 lbs shocks, and look to follow in Tvega's footsteps with some type of latching mechanism.

I had mine blow open a couple of times too...if you fit higher lb hydrauic struts (I think I have 60 lb ones on my full sun pad) it's even more likely to open...I would up fitting a hasp to the sun pad and the wood bulkhead behind my rear seats...that keeps it shut no matter how fast I go...

Oh and in addition I found there was no wood backing where the brackets for the hydraulic struts are mounted...the holes got cracked etc so some years back I fixed the 'glass and added 4x4 in piece of 1/2 plywood on each side as a backing plate to mount the bolts for the brackets...
