I have a 1996 190 Horizon with a volvo penta 5.0 FL model OMS 502APNCS motor. How do I adjust water pump tension? |

On my 1997 V.P., the sea water pump is on a bracket off to the side of the engine. There are two bolts holding the pump to the bracket. Top bolt is fixed, the bottom bolt is in a slot in the bracket. Loosen both bolts, pull the pump tight and tighten the bottom bolt first to set the tension, then the top bolt. |

Thank you, I finally found the bolt and adjustment slot while standing on my head. I tightened the belt ran the boat yesterday and found the belt had flipped inside out so its riding on the flat side of the V belt now and very loose. Also, the altenator belt keeps disinegrating and finally breaks I spoke to a volvo penta mechanic and he said to check for rust on the pulleys and I found quite a bit on the altenator pulley. I plan to order a new pulley. The water pump belt is what's got me baffled. I plan on buying a shop manual from four winns. Do you have any other advice? I can't imagine the belt would flip unless it was really loose or the alignment between the pump and crankshaft pulley was way off. Does the belt look ok if you have it off and in a free state? By the way, you mean the Volvo Penta engine manual correct? The Four Winns boat owners manual is very generic. Terry, My current belt and pulley set up is this. Two pulleys for three belts one at the top of the engine the other at the crank. The power steering unit, on the right side uses the first groove on the top and crank pulley aray and the pulley on the power steering pump unit. The Altenator, uses the outer most groove on the top and crank pulley aray and on the altenator unit on the left side of the engine, as looking at it. The sea-water pump uses the center groove and the center groove on the crank pulley. Shouldn't the belt for the sea water pump use the top pulley also. In this current configuration I cannot remove the sea water pump belt because the top pulley and crank pulley are to close. Also when I try to put the current belt on with the adjustment loose I have to force the belt over the sea water pump pulley. This doesn't leave much adjustment for tensioning and when I run the engine it appears to loosen the adjustment bolt causing missalignment and flipping the belt. I thought the pulley on the sea water pump had slipped off the shaft a bit causing the missalignment so I removed the pump and there is no set screws for positioning; everythng is press fit. When I put the pump back on the larger of the two hoses to the pump which rides along the oil pan seems to ride up against the pan so I flipped the pump so the smaller hose is now adjacent to the oil pan and this seems better. Needless to say we are not enjoying a great looking boat which when we purchased it seemed to run great. Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. TG |
