I'm ordering a backup prop but I cant find out what else I'll need, i.e. not sure what size prop wrench I should order. Some lubricant seems to be recommended, so I'll add a tube of that. But should I order a backup nut/washer as well? I also see pictures of a toothed wrench as well. Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

1 1/16" for the prop on my 5.0 Gxi with an SX-A drive... don't sorry about spare nut... there is a safety cotter pin to hold it in place if it comes loose...
Before I had a 1 1/16" socket, I used to take my prop nut off with a crescent wrench... its not that hard... hardest part of getting the prop off is that usually the final thrust washer (after the prop is off) gets stuck tight and you have to pry it loose with a pry bar and well placed whack (to the pry bar) from a hammer

I would recommend picking up one of the plastic prop wrenches for a couple of reasons...first they are cheap and second they float  plus they can loosen/tighten your drain plug. A spare nut, washer, cotter pin wouldn't hurt. If you ever have to change your prop while on the water, there's a good chance that something is going to visit the bottom of the lake so the extra stuff won't hurt.

Thanks for this post. I was at West Marine today about to buy that big monster prop wrench they sell, but was unsure of what size I needed. The tool is of course 1 1/16".

My question is if at home...any reason I cant use a 1 1/16" socket?
