I know these things have been beaten to death, but here goes anyway. 1998 FW 240 Horizon 5.7 gsi Duoprop. Same problem alot are having, with the trim goes down all the time, but only periodically, does it go back up. (no trailer switch on this model) The senario is this. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. When Im out in the lake, and it doesnt go back up. I can accelerate, bringing the bow up before plane, and the up trim will work again. Ive learned to just do this routine before docking, so I dont get stuck at the ramp in the down position again. Once its up over half way, it then moves all the time. (note that would also be around the same angle as when the bow is lifted). That is the senario Im dealing with. Now, here is what I have checked. Both relay's have been changed to new. All, and I do mean all the connections have been checked and rechecked, from the switch on the throttle, all the way to the pump, and out to the trim sender on the drive. Ive removed the trim sender on the starboard side of the drive, and even unpluged its connections, and the trim still functions as it should, so this is not the problem. ( apparently the trim sender, just provides the position to the analog gauge). Ive read and re-read the manual, and everything points to the trim limit control box. My boat should have one. Where on earth SHOULD it be located?? Ive looked high and low for this thing. The only place I havent looked, is literally, underneath the engine and in the floor sub panels by the fuel cell LOL! Ive traced all the wires back to the harness tube that runs thru the hull to the dash, it is nowhere to be found. Am I missing this trim limit control box somewhere, or is it possilbe, the previous owner has already bypassed this thing, and removed it from the boat? If anyone can point me in the right direction to find it, I would be most grateful! If for some reason, its already been removed, then why on gods green earth, am I still having symtoms of it still being connected? When this happens, there is no click from the pump, no noise what so ever. Yet it still moves down with no hicups. I raise the bow, and whaalaaa, its working again. Any insight to this from fellow members would lower my stress levels considerable. Thanks, Gary |

Many issues like this can be traced to trim pump fluid level, I'm thinking this was the first thing you checked. Didn't see this mentioned in your write up - just saying for the benefit of others following the topic. When I had low fluid levels, I had very strange symptoms - drive would go up very slowly, or not go all the way up. When underway, the trim pump pressure was not sufficient to lower the drive. When using the trim switch I could always hear the trim pump running, I had always thought that this proved the issue was not electrical. Maybe that's a bad assumption. |

Yes, the fluid level is fine. I even had the local dealer replace the trim cylinder seals and flush the system out along with replacing the fluid. Unfortunately, sitting on the trailer in my driveway, it always works as it should. Sounds stupid, but the only thing I can see is, I havent named the boat yet!! LOL Gary |

My 99 Horizon 190 5.0 would stop working and then start working again for no apparent reason. Turned out there was an electrical connection on the top of the motor that was just loose enough to connect and disconnect depending on motor vibration or waves. I got a buddy to press the trim button while I was shaking the wires and found the problem. I remember the wiring having a fairly large rubber connector. Looking at the motor it ran across the valve cover on the left of the carb. I can get the wire colors when I get home if that would help. I ended up taping the connector tightly together and it have been perfect ever since. ![]() |
