Today when I pulled my boat out, I noticed that the water that drained from my outdrive had a fairly heavy oily sheen. I noticed it as the water ran down the parking lot. I have the SX drive and never has the water actually drained from the prop exhaust, but rather it just pours out from where the bellows are. I really can't tell exactly where it's coming out, but when I lower the unit all the way down, there is no water that needs to come out of the prop since it has already all drained out. To drain my H180, I had to trim the drive down and the water pured out of the prop. There are no holes in the bellows (that I can see) and I tighted the clamps down really good in Spring.

So I guess I have two questions:

Is it normal for water to pour out of the "bellows area" of my drive? I called the Four Winns dealer in Spring when I ran it with the muffs on and they said that was normal for the SX drive.

What could be causing the oily sheen? I have not noticed it until today.

Based on all the posts lately, I'd start by checking your trim pump reservoir.

Not only the trim pump but also the power sterring...but that is what is going on with mine. :evil:

If the water is truly pouring out of your bellows, you have a problem with your bellows that needs to be addressed quickly as they should be sealed against water intrusion.

If it is coming from the exhaust in the same general area as the bellows, I might suspect that the power steering cooler is leaking internally?

Other possibilities to look at are the trim pump hose connections on the outdrive to see if they are leaking.

Also to confirm, this isn't water coming out when you pull your drain plug, correct?

Ummm if you have a 2007 or newer you may want to make sure your trim pump is not leaking just look at your trailer in a few days after running, if there is a oil residue your pump is probably leaking ASK ME HOW I KNOW. IT is located in on the gimble housing, and will leave a sheen on the water.

Leaky trim lines can also leave a sheen in the water too...I had one get cut by barnacles a few years back and had all 4 replaced...still have the original trim pump though...

The entire trim system on that boat is outside the drive, not inside...I am thinking power steering leak.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.................................Exactly!!!! I guess it could be something else, but I'm on trim pump # 3 in 3 seasons. If you don't have the transom mounted trim switch have someone operate the throttle trim for you while you watch from the back of the boat. Move it through it's entire range. When it gets to the top or bottom, most likely bottom, it will probably be spitting fluid out. :evil:

Like others have said water SHOULD NOT be coming from the bellows. If it truly is your going to have bigger problems than a leaky trim pump, so more likely it is coming from some place else and running down the bellows, making it look like it's coming from the bellows.

I recall seeing some drain holes in the exhaust bellows of a Volvo SX, they are to let water drain out but I don't think they are big enough for water to be pouring out. Now on my 88 OMC Cobra, the exhaust bellows is slit all the way across the bottom to reduce exhaust backpressure, most of the water comes out from under the exhaust bellows not the prop. The only things that can cause that oil sheen in the water are a drive oil leak (after the water evaporated this would be more obvious), a trim pump or line, the engine oil cooler (if equipped) or the engine itself, if it were burning oil this would show up in some of the exhaust water...But an engine oil cooler leak would cause milky oil which you would see on the dipstick and if you were burning oil you'd see the level going down...

Thanks for all the replys. I finally got a chance to stop by the boat last night and checked the cross member of the trailer right under the drive and noticed a very small puddle of red fluid. So is it safe to assume that I have a trim pump or line issue? I will head over again tomorrow night and try will move the outdrive up and down to see if any fluid spits out.

Yep tilt n trim fluid is similar to auto trans fluid (I've used Dexron in mine) so that's probably what it is...did you buy the boat new? Maybe Volvo will do a goodwill warantee on this one...

I bought the boat last November as a demo with 30 hours on it. Thankfully it did come with a Volvo 2 year engine / drive warranty, so I'm assuming this pump replacement will be covered. Should I take it in now or wait until the end of the season when I have it winterized? I just hate the idea of having it in the shop during the summer / early fall months.

I'd take it in as soon as I can - see if you can do a deal where they pre-order the parts so you can maybe drop it off on a Monday and pick up on a Friday??

I just saw a video of the new Volvo Sea Core outdrive and it also has the same external tilt pump on it that is giving everyone grief here... I'm wondering if this part has been upgraded since first released, or will you get back exactly the same pump you have now?

As to the bellows, are we talking drive shaft bellows, or exhaust bellows? I would think the exhaust bellows would be perforated intentionally, but am not sure of that.
