98 240 horizon 5.7 gsi DP VP.

I know nothing about props. Im curious of what I have, and if its the ideal setup. Top end is 45-47 tops, and the hole shot doesnt wow me but I have no problems with it. Here is the markings on the props. F6rear 3851476 and F6front 3851466. Unfortunately, I cant decifer what the stamped numbers are. The front prop looks like it may have an 18 in it, but I cant say for sure, as whoever stamped it, did a terrible job. These are VP stainless props.

If anyone can tell me what I have, and if it could be changed for better holeshot, that would be greatly appreciated. We mostly cruise at 30 and pull tubes. Like I said, I have no problems with this setup whatsoever, Im just curious of what I have and what others are running.

Thanks,
Gary

I can't speak to your exact year, but later 230/240's have similar performance. The only meaningful numbers on your props are the F numbers, which Volvo uses in place of a specific pitch number. The stock props on my '05 230 (now the 240) are F5's and with the 5.7GXi I get very good hole shot with a top speed of 48mph @ 5Krpm - exactly as per FW's printed specs.

I do wonder whether your boat originally had F5's or F6's. Are you able to get to 5Krpm?

45-52 mph is correct top speed for your boat with F6 prop set. You can change to a different set, but at almost $700 per propeller, it's an expensive change over for minimal gain .

Thanks,

I guess I never checked rpm at top speed, other than making sure I wasnt in the red, so I cant say for certain where it was. I did some searching and found the VP prop guide, and the F6 seams to be a tad above middle ground for that engine. I will check out the rpms next time out. (after I fix my starter of course :( ) I also found the price list of these props, and I was a bit surprised.

We were planning a trip over to the Chain o lakes in northern Illinois, (just an hour away), but now that I see how much these props are, I will pass on it. I boated on the chain back in the mid 90's, and tore up 2 aluminum props back then, not sure I want to take 1400 bucks worth the stainless out there and destroy a drive shaft.

Check any trips to the chain BEFORE you decide. They have been closing the lake alot recently.
Both of the last two weekends, with only partial opened to no wake only.

Thanks for the info. I just checked the fox lake dnr site, and it looks like they have had a terrible season so far. Back in the mid 90's when we lived there, I cant remember it being closed but maybe 2 weekends. Is this really due to the weather, or bad managment by the state.

From another post.
Quote:
My lake is fed from a river that reaches deep into Wisconsin. Two weeks ago they got hammered with a flood. The water is flowing thru our lakes now. Plus we’ve been getting quite a bit of rain too.
Chain O Lakes in Lake and McHenry counties. The area includes the lakes and channels that are fed by the Fox River. They flood every year, sometimes more than once.

Save your $ or send me $1,000 and I'll send you an F5 or F6 set. Your choice. I bought one of the two and honestly didn't find enough difference to make me remember which one is on the boat right now. Sure I "think" I felt a bit more hole-shot, but looking at my tach, my spedo, GPS, and gas guage comparing the two...it's a wash. Save your $ for fuel.
