This spring, my old trusty(?) 16.5' 1980 Vanguard Cutlass with a 80hp merc gave out. Was at the lake with my two boys and barely made it back to shore to get my wife and father-in-law. They were greeted by the sign of "hand across throat". No more boating that day. Wife said we need to get a "new(er) boat". Enough said... The words were still in the air, like a cartoon balloon, when:

The very next week I bought a used 2006 H183. I've been looking at this boat for some time. Have a number of friends with Four Winns boats. H180, H200, H173? (a 2004 17' fish-n-ski).

Boy, does this boat ever fit my needs. The kids like it for tubing/skiing and I like it for that and fishing. Its amazing how things convert between the two. There is a plate on the front for the trolling motor that would be nice to take off and the motor itself is a bit hard to put on the boat, but other than that its a noticeable difference from my prior boat. Its much quieter being an inboard engine (outboard drive, I know) and way wider with far more room. The 2006's seem to have the full 8' beam (2008 on had a 7'7" it seems) and the open bow is nice as my old boat was closed.

From the forums, I found the very necessary reccomendations to replace the speakers with Polk DB651's and I have to get a second set in the bow. Winterizing should be fun, coming from a two stroke, but will figure that out. I think a swim platform might be nice, but we are looking pretty good with a ladder at the rear rather than one thrown over the side.

All in all, a very good boat for smaller Canadian lakes (Mid-Northern Saskatchewan). Its already had a few nice-sized walleye in the live well that have made their way to a plate!

Take care,
Jr!
