Post subject:  Engine alarm sounder what does it monitor and makes it sound

We were getting ready to take the boat out and hooked the hose to just fire the engine in the driveway and test. All working fine, but the little alarm under the dash was sounding.

Checked the oil, temperature (had the hose hooked up with full water flowing and it has a new impellar), batteries, checked the alternator, belts, power steering, trim. Everything was working fine.

So we decided to take it out on the intra coastal where we would be near help if any problems. Everything worked fine, boat ran perfect with no issues. Temp was at its normal range (at idle and at speed), oil fine, etc.

There was a quick disconnect on the alarm that we disconnected after determining everything was running normal to not drive us crazy.

Can anyone tell me what it monitors that maybe we did not check? Thanks

besides the senders for the guages there is also warning sensors for temperature and oil pressure, could be one of them has malfunctioned. if you unplug them the warning will stop if thats what the issue is.

I am guessing the previous owner had installed a quick disconnect for the alarm as it does not look like something Four Winns would have installed. We disconnected temporarily for the afternoon. However, I do not want to run with it disconnected and was trying to figure out what could be causing the alarm.

The oil was full (maybe a tad over on the dipstick) and the gauge read in the normal range. Same with the engine temperature. It ran at the normal level. Batteries full charge on both and the alternator was checked with the multi meter and working fine.

Is it possible the gauge is not reading accurate? IE showing everything normal yet the sensor is tripping the alarm because the engine temp is high? Or does the gauge reading make the alarm go off?

If it is all separate guages and not one big cluster than the alarm is triggered off different sensors, which is what i believe they did in 2003. If the alarm goes off as soon as you start it then its likely a shorted out sensor.

Was is a solid horn or a beeping sound? I recently had the on and off beeping sound go off on mine and it turned out that the stern oil resevoir was empty because of a broken hose. Might want to check that?

I did not check the stern oil. Did not know if there was a sensor there. I was also thinking I did not check the hydraulic for the trim, but not sure there is a sensor there either.

VP doesnt use gear oil level sensors unless its a brand new unit and trim oil doesnt have sensors.
