Boat is a 03 Horizon 180. Odd thing is the speedo only shows 35 MPH. This doesn't seem right. The previous owner said he changed the prop with a different pitch. Would this affect the top speed by 10 MPH or more? What else could be wrong? Thanks.

Yep, could definitely be the prop. He may have propped it to pull up a large skier or a massive holeshot which will kill the top end. Mine does 50 mph by GPS. Rpm sounds ok. Find out what the stock prop should be and buy one and the mph should come back up.

I would first borrow someone's handheld gps to verify your speed. Boat speedometers are often inaccurate, and you may actually be going faster than you think.

I agree... get a gps with a speedo or if you have a smart phone you can download an speedo application. I just put an ap on mine this morning and checked it on the way to work with my car. Very cool and on the money. 8) Can't wait to check my boat next time out to see how accurate it is.

Check what your wide open rpm specs should be, but it sounds to me like your engine is reaching max rpm, so that's all she wrote, changing the prop will either let it over-rev (bad) or slow it down more....
the spec for my old 88 4.3 with 4bbl carb is 4600-4800, which it reaches with a 15x17 prop...

of course this is assuming that your tach is accurate....probably more likely to be accurate than the speedo...

Just checked - my prop is a 14.25" x 23" pitch. The documentation says it should give a top speed of 47-50 mph.
