Just bought a brand new 2006 horizon 200 with the 5.0 volvo/sx drive. I traded my 2005 bayliner 185 (P.O.S) and really did not add much to my monthly payment. I p/u on monday and I am taking tuesday off to put her on the water...I can hardly wait. I will post pics and report after we take her out and test it. I am glad to have found this web site and will be a regular poster!!! I am from Omaha, NE and the only four winns dealer anywhere near here was BUZZ marine in Kearney Ne....top notch dealer with over 50 years in the business, I would love to hear from any other 200 horizon owners so e-mail me anytime!!!!

Breaking-in
The engine must be broken-in for its first 10 operating
hours as follows:
• Operate the engine normally.
• Do not operate it at full load except for short periods.
• Never run the engine at a constant engine speed
for long periods during the breaking-in period.
• Check the oil level more often than is normally
recommended; the engine can be expected to
use more engine oil during the breaking-in
period than would otherwise be normal.
For a more detailed explanation of the break-in period,
please refer to the appropriate section in the chapter
entitled Maintenance on page 61.
A First Service Inspection should be carried out after
20–50 running hours.

Engine Break-in Period
NOTE! To ensure proper lubrication during the break-in period, do not remove factory break-in oil until after the
20-hour break-in is completed. The First Service inspection should be carried out after 20 hours of operation.
CAUTION! Failure to follow engine break-in procedures can result in serious engine damage.
CAUTION! Do not run engine at a constant RPM for prolonged periods of time during the break-in period.
All Volvo Penta engines have been run for a short time during a final test at the factory. You must follow the engine
break-in procedure during the first 20 hours of operation to ensure maximum performance and longest engine life.

Break-in Procedures
During the break-in period, watch out for the following
items during the initial engine run:
1. Check engine oil level frequently.
CAUTION! The engine may use more engine
oil during the break-in period than would otherwise
be normal. Be sure to check the oil level
frequently during the first 20 hours of
operation, since the oil consumption will be
high until the piston rings are properly seated.
• Maintain oil level in the safe range, between the
ADD and FULL marks on dipstick. Somewhat
higher oil consumption is normal until the piston
rings have seated.
• If you have a problem getting a good oil level
reading on the dipstick, rotate the dipstick 180°
in the dipstick tube.
• When adding engine oil, use Volvo Penta engine
oils for gasoline engines, or a good quality oil
(API Service CF/SH or better) of the same viscosity.
Use the following chart to select the SAE
viscosity that matches the temperature range in
which you expect to operate.

2. Watch the oil pressure gauge.
• Oil pressure will rise as RPM increases, and fall
as RPM decreases. In addition, cold oil will generally
show higher oil pressure for any specific
RPM than hot oil. Both of these conditions reflect
normal engine operation.
• If the oil indicator fluctuates when the boat is
turning, climbing on plane, etc., the oil pickup
screen may not be covered with oil. Check the
oil dipstick. If required add non-synthetic oil, but
do not overfill. If the oil level is correct and the
condition persists, ask your Volvo Penta dealer
to check for possible gauge or oil pump malfunction.
3. Watch the engine temperature indicator to be
sure there is proper coolant circulation.
CAUTION! Failure to follow the break-in procedure
may void the engine warranty.
First Two Hours
1. For the first five to ten minutes of operation, run
the engine at a fast idle (above 1500 RPM).
2. During the remaining first two hours of operation,
accelerate to bring the boat onto plane quickly;
bring the throttle back to maintain a planing attitude.
During this period, vary the engine speed frequently
by accelerating to approximately ¾ throttle
for two to three minutes, then back to minimum
cruising speed.
3. After the engine has reached operating temperature,
momentarily reduce engine speed, then
increase engine speed, to assist break-in of rings
and bearings. Maintain plane to avoid excessive
engine load.
CAUTION! For this initial two hour break-in,
do not run the engine at any constant RPM for
prolonged periods of time.

Congratulations on making a GREAT choice in a new boat, I nearly bought the same boat when choosing my new boat and love your model!


I did the correct break in when I picked up my new Funship 194 in June of 2004 and am happy I was patient and did the BY THE BOOK prescribed break in--no troubles.

I drove nearly 400 miles to Boat S'port in Eagle River, Wisconsin to buy my Four Winns, John Mors, the owner and his wife Mary are the best people to deal with and HONEST! My kids call him "Uncle John" and love to see him each trip we make up there for our vacations and long weekends. For my last Four Winns' major repair, an engine replacement, I had the brand new engine shipped directly to John at Boat S'port and towed the busted 190 Horizon up there for a great replacement by Len, the shop manager.

I would not tow a skier until you've racked up at least 15 or more hours follwing your adherence to the presribed break in, I am always cautious on the long side! I also purchased the VOLVO PENTA extended warranty for piece of mind and hope to NEVER need it!!

Congratulations – I am a future Four Winns owner BTW.
I am really interested in some of the comparisons you can make between the two boats.

I currently own a BL 185 – I know this is a Four Winns site. Total respect to that & nothing said will hurt my feelings.

I would really love to hear a side-by-side comparison Ted.
