Post subject: | Stalling out on Idle |
Back again! Seems like every time I take my boat out, it comes back with another problem! Here is my new problem... I can only keep the motor running at high RPM's and not at idle. It keeps stalling out. I'm thinking it needs a new carb. since the old one looks like it is on ts last leg. It's on a Merc 4.3 ltr V-6 I/O. Any advise?? Thanks in advance for your help! Terry |

Does it run at idle at all, or just after going to idle it slowly idles down to the point of the engine shutting off? I presume you have good fuel in the boat? Are there any problems starting, or does it start right up? If its running strong/normal while at higher RPMS, then to me sounds like it just needs a tune up specific to the carburetor. Over time a carburetor can become gummed up so to speak, and needs cleaning and readjusting. At least that was the case with my boat last year. Not all the time, but occasionally the engine on my boat would just die while floating in the water while in neutral. Never caused us any down time per say, but after the season was over prior to winterizing the boat had them clean and readjust the carb and never had a problem after that. Mine was specific to the floats in the carb. This probably doesn't offer much help but I don't think its anything major. Good luck. |

Thanks for the response. No it does not run at idle at all. As I idle down from higher RPM's, it just stalls out. It takes 3-4 times to turn over the engine normally (even prior to this problem). Have to pump the gas prior then try it. The gas I recently put in was 89 octane and not the usual 92. Could this be the problem? Thanks for your input. Always appreciate it! Terry |

Yep, sounds like the idle passages in the carb are blocked to me. Think of the carby as two completely seperate parts, the idle curcuit and the cruise or power circuit - and they do operate in isolation from each other. So your cruise circuit works fine by the sounds of it, but the idle circuit is either blocked or sucking air, which means it won't idle at all and will behave exactly as you describe. The octane of the fuel will not cause this. Solution will be a carby rebuild or replacement... ![]() |

very rare that a carb has to be replaced, I have rebuilt ones that were soaked in water for weeks and they worked just fine, probably needs a good rebuild. |
