Back again! Coming from a novice mechanic here, I am having problems with the outdrive not going down but it will go up though! I have a 1986 Horizon witrh I/O v-6. I verified the switch and wiring are sound to the point of connection to a "relay or solinoid" type device. (There are 2 of them, I assume one for up and the other for down). When I check the voltage to the connector terminal of these relays, I have 14 DC volts to one (I assume is the good one) and only 2.5 DC volts to the other (this is where the trim/tilt switch wires go to). I also can hear the one relay "switch or click on" when up is activated but nothing for the down.

Is this a relay type problem or a wiring issue or something worse. I noted that the trim/tilt wires were spliced previously. As usual, any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Did you try switching the relays to see if down works and up doesn't? This would be my first step. That will tell you if you have a bad relay or not. The second step would be to check the splices and make sure you have the full voltage there.... Maybe even redo them yourself to make sure they are good. It has to be a simple electrical problem...If the pump works one way it should work the other. Mkae sure and spary some electrical contact cleaner in the relay sockets and once you get everything working put some electrical grease on the relay prongs.

Looks like a faulty solinoid. I am also going to re-wire the trim switch just to be safe. There were 3 places where the wire was cut and re-crmped.
My question is should I solder the conections vs. crimping?

In marine applications crimping is usually preferred. But it needs to be a good crimp with good insulation used where applicable (i.e., not black tape).

For some reason i assumed you had a volvo, however if you have solenoids you have a merc. 89-96158t is the part number for those, very common problem.

Arghhhhh. Still not working. Now the trim motor is not working at all. Is there a reset switch or fuse to the trim motor. I have voltage to both the solinoids but no go. I even tried to by-pass the trim switch and jump the solinoids but neither one is working..Any suggestions?? My next step is to jump the trim motor directly to the battery to see if that is working!
