Service guys found this bouncing around in the bilge. They said it looks like an anti-knock sensor, but couldn't see anything missing from the motor. They know their stuff, and are Volvo-certified. We have a 5.0L GXi. Thoughts? ![]() |

Not some type of fancy drain plug from the lower edge of the block is it? The size and thread type looks like the drain plug size. Does the black plastic bit move at all as in pull/push?? |

That's either an oil pressure sending unit or a temperature sending unit. The wire would connect on the black end. These guys were Volvo certified and didn't know what that was? I think I would be looking for another service provider..... |

That is a Knock sensor,is your motor FI or carb? These sensors screwed into the block just above the oil pan. Andrew |

the 5.0 GXi is the higher output 270HP fuel injected version, its a knock sensor. They are not used on carb engines. It screws into a brass fitting that has a plug in it also. And like someone else mentioned, if your guys didnt know what it was then they shouldnt be working on it because thats a knock sensor, they all look the same on all GM EFI engines. Never seen one just fall out unless someone was pulling plugs and the pulled it out thinking they had to when they didnt. |

I guess it's a knock sensor then... Maybe you shouldn't let me work on your motor! ![]() |

I've seen em on cars (had to replace one on my wife's Subaru) but my old 88 has no such thing....at least I can say it's painted Volvo red.... BTW when the knock sensor went bad on the Subaru, it set an engine check light that I was able to read with the code reader, and the engine ran poorly because the ecu retarded the timing back to some fail safe value...so it was obvious that something was wrong. Not having worked on a boat newer than my ancient one, would the engine run right without it? |

The engine will run fine without it however if there is ever any issue that the knock sensor would handle such as bad fuel, low octane causing detonation or something then the engine would blow before you even knew anything was wrong. |
