Hey Guys

I'm thinking of putting 100% synthetic oil in my engine? What brand synthetic and weight would you recommend? Should I just use the Merc brand? There are so many benefits with Synthetics.

Have any of you used the K&N Marine oil filters before? from what I'm reading on other forums its the best:

Royal Purple or Mobil 1 30W Synthetic.

Nothing wrong with K & N filters. Not worth a large discussion however. Buy what you like.

Is this a Merc or Volvo boat? In any case even though they use the same engines they recommend different viscosity oils. Merc, they advise to use their 25/40 oil which is available in synthetic now, there is a semi syn version as well as a standard dino oil version (non syn). They also recommend straight 30 below 50* and straight 40 above that temp. Volvo recommends a syn straight 30 and 20w/50 if you can't find that. If it's a newer engine the syn is a good idea, but if it's an older one the benefits are less dramatic. In fact some have said that using it in an older engine can cause leaks but that's a point of debate. Filters, I'd just use a good brand, Purolator in my cars has been good, I use Sierra Marine filters because the finish stands up to salt air well and my boat spends all summer on a salt water mooring.

I use straight 40 Chevron Delo 400 which is is a heavy duty oil that you can use in either diesel or gas engines.

Hi

Me, I use 30-50W oil. Ether Mobil 1 or Amsoil, both are 100% synthetic. I also use car type oil filters, the marine type are a waste of money. In other words, over priced!!!
