Where do they mount the subwoofer option on the 2004-2007 230/240 Horizon?

I'm thinking of adding one.

Most likely, the same place they mounted mine in '05. Near the deck plate in the side just below the captain's seat.

Mike

How does it sound?
What amp do you have?
And do you have a pic?

Thanks

1. I think it sounds great
2. Whatever the stock Clarion amp is with the "Subwoofer option"
3. No

Seriously, I'm sure it's not up to the level of the guys who spend $2K on can speakers, mega amps, #4 cables, etc. To me, boating is about getting away and peace & quiet, not blowing my ears out (let alone the others on the lake who are also there for the peace). But when sitting in coves and just want to listen to some nice tunes at a reasonable volume, it sounds very good IMO, especially considering that an open boat is a horrible place to try to make a system sound good. Also remember that the factory option includes tweeters.

I don't have any pics, but if you need some I can take them in the next few days.

BTW, love your pic. I got ours out of the water like that once, last year. Admiral was NOT amused. Actually it was an accident and I don't intend to do it again :) .

I'm just looking for a fuller sound with the sub.

When you say "Near the deck plate in the side just below the captain's seat." is that just below the throttle? Right now I have a small access opening with a cover to get to the back of the engine controls. I assume they just cut that out and install the sub. If access is needed you could just remove the sub. Does this sound about right? Also, where is your amp mounted? The best place I found so far is under the seat where the cooler goes and to the right. There is a nice flat board there.

Thanks again

The factory mount location is just to the right of that access hole. I believe my amp is mounted on the forward side of the helm, accessed through the fold-open seatback in the bow area.

I'd be happy to take a couple of pics, and they might save you some unforseen trouble. I need to go by the boat anyway, it's been awhile since I've been up there.

The factory sub option definitely improves the sound. Some might say not $850 dollars' worth (what the option cost at the time), but we've always really enjoyed how it sounds. While it doesn't turn the boat into an an ear-splitting party barge, it really does a nice job of filling out a wide-open boat with quality sound and nice full lows. I doubt that the tweeters make as much difference on the top end as the sub makes on the bottom, but I do think they help somewhat also.

Mike - If you have the opportunity to post some pics I'd appreciate it.

Thanks for the info -

Here you go.

This first one is obscured by the captain's seat. You can see the deck plate which is directly below the throttle, to the left of the seat arm. You can see part of the sub through the opening in the side of the seat, immediately to the right of the deck plate:

Next are a couple of shots from behind the front seats. This is looking from behind the captain's seat:

Next is the sub mounting location, inside the storage area immediately in front of the helm. The surface the sub is mounted on is the back side of where the dash itself is screwed to the fiberglass.

Finally, here's what the tweeters look like next to the main speakers. There's a tweeter next to each of the four mains.

Hope that gives you something to go on! I see Crutchfield has the same amp in stock for $360 now. One thing I don't know anything about is how difficult it would be to run cable in & out of that location.

Mike,

Those pics are exactly what I was looking for. Turns out I ordered the Amp and Sub last night. Slightly different amp though. I went with the smaller clarion amp and will dedicate it to the sub. If I feel I need more power to the other speakers I plan to get the amp you have and dedicate it to the four speakers around the boat. Either way, I will be disturbing the peace this summer.

Thanks again,
Tim

Mike,

Just want to thank you again for posting the pics. They really helped with my installation, especially determining the remote turn on lead. The sound is exactly what I was looking for.

Wow, nice installation Tim! Looks just like the factory install - except neater. Nice job on the wire loom.

I assume you had to enlarge the hole for the sub? What did you use to do that?

Thanks

I taped it up and used a jigsaw. I had to cut out the access hole to make it fit. If I need to get back there it is just a few screws and now with a much bigger opening.
