Post subject: | Engine Running Cooler??? |
I noticed that my engine temp gauge is registering cooler than average. I was always running around 160-170 degrees, now it's running 110 to 120 degrees. Anything that would cause for this lower reading. I have 19' Horizon with I/O 4.3 ltr. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! |

Could be a gauge problem, sensor problem, or most likely a stuck thermostat. |

Could your thermostat be stuck open?? It is easy to remove and check out. You just need to replace the gasket. Is it a open system or closed?? If it is open, don't be surprised at all the rust. If closed, you are going to louse coolant. So have some on hand & burp the system. |

Thanks for your input! It's an open system so that should be a easy job. |

All it takes is a piece of rust or sand and the thermo will not close all the way and then you will get that, it never warms up unless you run it on plane. I usually replace mine every 2 seasons or so... |

Mine was 18 years old (Suspected) it would not get over 110 on the muffs...It was frozen-open. |

I have twins and my port engine had a stuck open thermostat once and not only did it run cooler but I noticed that it sucked up the gas a lot more than my starboard. Given the price of gas now, I would fix it quick even though running it won't hurt the engine (or will it?). |

Well, a "cold" engine will tend to run rich, so I wouldn't say it's particularly good for the engine, but it's not a "tow me back" situation either. It might be a bit more of a concern with cats. But then, everything will be a concern with those. I'm waiting for someone to come out with a "test tube" for boats like they made back in the late '70's to "test the need to replace your catalytic converter." ![]() |
