I just bought a 1999 Horizon 220. Seems to be in good shape but I will know more next week when it gets delivered. Paid $11,500 in North Carolina and moving it to Alberta.Similar boats here were in the $18,000 to $20,000 range. The only issue is that the dealer states that there is no hour meter on the boat. Is this true? I would have thought that the gauge cluster would have one? Any help would be appreciated. |

We had a 1999 Sundowner; it did not have an hour meter as standard, it had one fitted near the engine (2", made by Hobbs I think). The wiring was already there for it. Graham |

Firstly Welcome to the forum. When I bought my H180 it didn't come with one standard so I had the dealer fit one. Now about the rules of this forum, if there isn't pics it didn't happen. So post us some pics of your new boat. Once again welcome |

^^What Ardy said...welcome and post pics^^  My 99 H200 doesn't have an hour meter. I'm not sure, but there may be a way to get the hours off the vdo cluster, but I think you need a special reader or a button push sequence. Don't quote me on that though. I know the original owner of my boat used it very little. I don't put a ton of hours on it each year  I'm not too worried about it.

i found my hour meter 3 weeks after i bought my 99 horizon 240 it it was under the rear flip up cushion directly over the battery on the starboard side |

Thanks for the feedback. I am glad I found the site. I wont see the boat until next Friday. Bought it out of North Carolina and having it delivered to Alberta. I am not sure how to post pics but I will figure it out. Great to have knowledgeable folks that are willing to assist closeby. Thanks again. |

Boat looks great, just some minor things that are expected on a boat that age, needs a bit of gelcoat repair and upholstery work, but any boat that age will probably need that. I'd like to see records of maintenance, but that might be hard to get. The things that would make sense to me are an oil sample analysis, pull the drive drain plug to check for water in the gear oil, and take a pic of the engine running on the water hose, so you could see idle water temp and oil pressure as well as checking around the block and manifolds for possible water leaks from not winterizing properly. |

looks good...very similar to my h200, just a couple feet longer  Based on the ending price, I would say you got a decent deal. I've seen several h180/190 of that vintage on the market for 14-15k, which imo is a bit high. Under 12k for a 220 is a pretty good deal. Make sure to crank the boat on the trailer a bit further than they have it on there. It looks to be about 2-4" too far back. I wouldn't worry about the gelcoat and upholstery. As Lou mentioned, that's to be expected for a 12 yr old boat. After you've put a few dings and scratches on it yourself, then look at getting things patched up. Enjoy your ntu h220!

Thanks guys. Here is Alberta you usually find the smaller boats, 18-20 feet. usually they are in the $15,000 to 19,000 range. I found nothing in the 22-24 foot size that was decent. We plan to use it mostly in BC and we have a large family do I figured larger was better in that case. So I also think we got a decent deal, if not in price, at least I didnt need to buy new. The dealer seemed very honest and said it was in excellent condition with the exception of some dock scratches. So we will see later in the week. I will post some "real" pictures when I get her. |

install you a mechanical style hour meter - easy hookup to ignition switch and can be mounted where you can see it....advantage mechanical it you see it working at any given moment, it will not dump your data due to power disconnect....yes it will keep ticking if ignition is left on, but i personally don't leave ignition on unless boat is running. |

Ok Guys and Gals. I need some help. The 99 Horizon 220 has a Volvo Penta 5.0 gxi with a carb. when we took it out for its first run it was very sluggish off the start as well as when approaching full throttle. Trimming up the prop helped a bit. But nt a whole lot. So here is my question? Could it be the elevation? Edmonton Alberta sits at 2192 feet and Lake Norman, North Carolina sits at 770 feet. if that is it, what is the remedy? Is the carb adjustable or do I need new needles? Thanks for any assistance you can provide. |

I'm not sure that difference in altitude would matter but it could to some extent, basically I live at sea level (Long Island) so I have no standard of comparison. I'd guess that if the fuel mixture is correct at sea level it would be too rich at altitude, since the air is thinner. I'm not sure if a change in main jets is needed or not, you could ask a local to you marine mechanic what happens if they get boats set up for sea level in you area. The idle mixture is adjustable, but I'm not sure that would be enough to compensate. The way we used to adjust carbs back in the day, was to make sure the ignition was in good shape, then warm up the engine. Hook up a tach/dwell meter (now an engine analyzer) and then slowly screw in one of the idle needles till it starts to stumble, that's called the lean roll, then screw it out till it starts to stumble (rich roll) the idea is to set it between these two points, or a little closer to the rich side. Do the same for both idle mixture needles... I'd probably start with a good tune up, plugs, rotor, dist cap, fuel filter, inspect the contents of the filter, look for water in the gas...Also my boat had a performance problem (did not plane out the boat, it would start and idle fine) that was caused by a corroded anti siphon valve, this is a spring loaded safety valve on top of the gas tank that keeps gas from siphoning into the bilge, if the fuel line to the pump leaks. In order for gas to flow, the pump has to be able to overcome the spring pressure and lift a ball off the seat in the valve. If it gets stuck the engine starves for fuel, like a bad fuel pump. My boat also needed a carb rebuild but after that it ran fine for years.... |

Thanks for the feedback. I will take it to a marine mechanic this week for a full service. A friend of mine runs race cars and he has to change the needles in the carb when at sea level, so I think he is on to something with regards to altitude. there could be other issues as well. The boat may have sat for some time and it arrived with 3/4 tank of gas. So we could be dealing with bad gas. I added octane boost and stabilizer as well as some new gas. But after the barb is set we will run it low and try a new tank. I also thought the gxi was fuel injected but found a carb there after all. |
