Bolt broke off

Since some do not always look at the engine forum, here is a link to an issue I had on my Freedom/Horizon and maybe someone has been down this road before.

That bites - soak is with a product (spray) called "break free" or something like that..its a penetrating lubricant for removing bolts...you want to spray it down and let sit for a day or at least couple hours......the EX out is a tool you will need if you can't get hold of it with vice grips.

It's essentially a hardened drill bit looking tool with a reverse turn thread....you drill a hole in the center of the bolt..tap in the Ez out tool and turn it to the left - it will turn into the bolt as you rotate counterclockwise and hopefully grab hold and spin the bolt out.

FYI - buy a small punch before you drill the bolt....you want to tap the punch in the center so your drill bit will not want to wander - you want to stay center as not to hit the threads in the block and damage them. just drill enough to get the ez out tool started so you don't drill into the block. You tap the ez out in and give it a gentle turn to the left...tap again...turn again and work in there that way....then you can start trying to back it out...it will have a square head on the back side you can grab it from - i use vice grips normally to hold and turn as i tap it in.

Like you said though - if you can grab the exterior of the bolt - then vice grips and penetrating lubricant spray is your starting point.

Dont get beasty with it - its a surgical procedure not a tractor pull event....if the easy out doesn't work - the entire bolt will have to be drilled out and the opening re=threaded....done all the time so don't freak out.

Turns out (pardon my non-technical term) it was not a bolt sheered off. There is a bolt that goes into the engine block that is mounted to a spacer (painted red in my case and I had not noticed it at first) with another bolt sticking out of it. The power steering pump bracket slides over and a nut tightens it down. So I put a wrench on it and pulled it out. After trying to drill it out, I realized it was not really a bolt stuck inside.

Temporary for yesterday's boating trip, I used an exhaust bolt that I was able to recreate the OEM bolt. I need to find the part number and order one.

So you were talking about a threaded stud over which a bracket is placed and you tighten with a nut......so you have no problem....just go buy the correct size nut in stainless - like any hardware or big box store anywhere will have. Would imagine its 1/2 or 9/16ths.

Got a new one at my Volvo dealer. Also replacing one of the other two power steering bracket bolts (dealer was out of the 3rd, but I will get one to just have all new ones.

Of course they had to use 2 different types of thread's. I it was the same, you could make up a spacer. Got to love them!!

I know. The upper spacer appears to have the same threads (the one my dealer did not have). I used an exhaust bolt that was the same and fit through the bracket and it worked perfect. I just wanted the correct part.

The mechanic told me to hit it with some paint (the part exposed). I am guessing that is why they painted the engines? Keep corrosion down?
