Boad idels fine, runs great a low rmp's when you throttle up sounds like a vacumm leak, motor starts to cut out, eventually backfires and dies. After setting for a while it starts fine and runs for a bit then does the same thing agian.

Can anybody help?

Bad fuel pump caused by that poison al gore shoved down our throats. Be sure to get all the water out of your gas tank as well.

Yep, sounds like a fuel supply problem to me... do the simple things first - check non-return valve on the fuel tank is OK and you don't have a tank venting problem - try taking off the gas tank cap and see if that improves the situation. Next would be to change gas, change fuel filter and then change Al Gore! If the problem is still there, then check fuel pressure and/or replace fuel pump. Last thing, rebuild the carb.

The problem with these older boats is that they never thought about having to run them on ethanol fuel blends, so you get all sorts of problems with anything rubber in the fuel system...

I have the same boat and engine and I have experienced fuel pump failures the last couple of years. I found this spring that the return valve was bad and causing the pump noise and eventual failure.

I replaced the high pressure fuel pump and the low pressure........No change.......I pulled the pickup tube out of the gas tank again the fitting at the top of the tube had a check valve in it with two bugs stuck in it.......removed the bugs problem solved.......The WIFE was not happy.

Wow... bugs blocking it... that's a new one on me. Anyways, at least you found it and you know you won't have a fuel pump problem for a few years  At least you diodn't pay a mechanic to do this for you - would have added a couple more hundred to the bill.

Maybe try selling the old pumps on eBay etc... and buy the wife some flowers!

I had the same problem on a fishing trip in Key Largo. We took the boat out of the water took it to the boat mechanic and we had the boat full of beer and bait and rods and the man dropped what he was working on and connected the engine to a fresh 5 gallon tank and it ran like a dream. Get all the old fuel out of it, he changed the fuel separator and we filled her up and put some of that fuel additive for the ethanol haven't had the problem on my buddies boat since. Hope you get to the bottom of the problem. 8) Joe from Miami
