Hello all, Newbie here with a freshly purchased 1996 Four Winns Horizon 190. Very impressed with the quality of this boat after looking at several other makes. I have a quick tech question that hopefully someone can answer in short order. All engine systems appear to be in normal working order but I am freshening up a few mechanical bits just for peace of mind, one being the alternator. Again, the charging system was working fine but the outward appearance of the alternator was skunky enough to entice me to replace it. My question is regarding an automotive cross reference. Is there a Ford vehicle, year and model, that I can reference at my local auto supply store to get an appropriate replacement? I spent half an hour there yesterday with a very helpful clerk and we looked at several different years and models but couldn't come up with a suitable replacement. We did the same with the H20 pump and found that a 68 Mustang with a 302 seemed to be the correct part. (I will know for sure in a few hours when it comes in) Any help and advice is appreciated! Trying to post a picture but not having much luck. Thanks! |

Do not use automotive parts on a marine engine. All electrical parts are sealed on a marine engine. Your motor is in an enclosed box, not open to the air like an auto engine is. A stray spark could blow you out of the water and set your boat on fire. Have seen this happen with automotive parts on marine engines. Not smart IMHO. |

Very good point! Thanks for that. I'll go ahead with the original. |

Ditto with the water pump - auto water pumps will rot out in no time if you use the boat in salt or brackish water. Get a marine pump and it'll last forever. |

If you are worried about that alternator, try getting it rebuilt at an auto electric shop. They usually do starters, alternators, those type of things. That way you know it will bolt right back on. |
