Post subject:  H240 subwoofer location

Hi there, newbie here but have been doing some poking around. I've seen some old threads related to this so please direct me if my issue here is addressed somewhere I can't find.

My 08 has the upgraded stereo package: Kicker ZX700.5 amp and 10" sub. My issue is with the location of the sub, it vibrates like holy H. Four Winns seems to have planned nicely for the "volume" required for the sub, but that thin-wall fiberglass is no match for the power of the sub. Additionally, the throttle assembly vibrates terribly, sounds terrible, and I'm actually concerned that over time all of that vibration will cause mechanical breakdown within the throttle unit.

I discovered that part of the problem was that four of the eight mounting screws actually stripped out and the woofer was not secure. I had to epoxy a plywood backer behind the sub mounting hole to give the screws something to bite and hold. BUT, the main problem still exists.

My question is this: Has anyone relocated their sub to a more desireable location? I've identified three possibilities:
1. Behind the passenger seat, this would be the angled area at the front of the cooler storage. (and seems the easiest of the other two following options).
2. In the bow of the boat, directly in the front/nose, under the seat, the sub would be pointing directly back toward the cockpit. This area seems REALLY stout, but I see there would be a challenge dealing with the curvature of the surface to mount a 10" sub.
3. This looks to be the toughest option. In the back of the cockpit mounted in the center underneath the rear seat (right where the courtesy light is.. this would have to be relocated). However, there is a feature line in the fiberglass that would have to be dealt with....and I haven't closely checked the dimensions to even see if a 9" hole will fit here.

I had an 89 Lib 211 prior to this, mounted the sub under the rear seat and was really nice...but that boat was wood. No wood in today's boats, fiberglass isn't exactly subwoofer-friendly!

Any input is appreciated!

Shane

I actually put my JL 10-inch sub in a sealed box and placed it down in the lower storage compartment behind the helm. That storage area was always difficult to get to so I really don't miss the space and I have been very happy with the sound of the sub. And the best part......no cutting fiberglass. Just another option for you to consider.

I have my 10" sub in a sealed box located in the dead space between the ice chest and the batteries.

Eric/Jeff,
Thanks for the input. I do prefer a sealed box, but I am a storage freak...need it with the kids and all. Helm storage: tools and jumper cables. Dead space in front of batteries: Life jackets/extra lines. As a side note I also have seen a sealed box wedged in the engine compartment, in the corner on the port side and closest to the rear seat. But I used this space to store my table top to get it out of the enclosed head!

I think I may go for the angled area behind the passenger seat, this surface appears really strong. It measures a little over 10 1/2" high so it will be tight getting a 10" sub there, plus I have to deal with the raised feature line about 2" from the floor. I may move to an 8"....but we'll see.

Anyone have experience or thoughts on this area? Things that go all vibration crazy and ruin my sub experience is what I'm mainly concerned about. (Yes I'm almost 40 but I still like good, loud clean sound!) Only thing I can see at this point would be the cup holders (easy fix) and possibly the (relatively cheap) plastic lining that dresses the inset cup holder area to the side of the seat above the ice chest storage.

Cheers,
Shane

That area should be as good as any, as long as you can get your wiring over there.

Yes, relatively easy access via ski locker. Helm area to locker is wide open, locker to target area is accessible under the floor - barely, but there is enough clearance.
