Post subject: | Installing Bimini top |
I recently purchased an oem Bimini for my 2000 Horizon and I got a windshield mount from Four Winns. It is plastic and goes over the top rail of the windshield. Does this need any drilling or do I need some sort of set screw to secure this to the boat. I also bought a stainless part that needs to be drilled into the rail but I would rather use the oem part if I can avoid drilling. Thanks |

If you are going to drill into the windshield frame, be VERY VERY CAREFUL you don't hit the glass (easy to do because you don't know how far under the rubber gasket the glass extends) or you will break that piece of tempered glass into a gazillion little pieces... Even though they do it, I don't like mounting biminis to the windshield frame, I prefer mounting them to the gunnels, then there is no stress on the frame. If you have to do it that way, I'd remove the glass (carefully) first. Then when you install the mount make sure that the screw does not contact the glass or that will pop it into a billion pieces too.... |

Thanks I am hoping that these brackets will hold the top with two set screws without drilling |

IMO, that might hold it as long as the boat doesn't move but I wouldn't trust set screws to hold it if you have the top up while under way. |

you should have the windshield mount brackets on there already from the convertible top. All you really should need are the rear hinges (10-15 a piece for stainless) and a couple of eye straps. Some hints when drilling, put some blue painters tape down prior to drilling/marking, mark your holes, drill in reverse a little, then shift to forward. I just put a oem bimini on my 99 H200 last weekend. I imagine you have the same one. The canvas shop where I bought the hinges/eye straps recommended putting 3m 5200 under the hinges which I did (just a thin layer). Good luck! |

Thanks for the advise. The windshield hinges are not already on the boat. I am going to look around at a local marina and see what other four winns owners have done. |

My Bimini has the rear gunnel mounts with a thumb tightening screw that is attached to the side glass frame with two screws and a curved plate and the front connects with two hooks mounted forward of the windshield. Don't be confused by the white and black poles in the middle of the picture. They are fishing rods and not part of the bimini, but in the picture it looks like a support. ![]() ![]() |
