Hello new horizon owner here got a question on heat of motor after its shut off some hours later. When i returned about 2 hours later to check on the boat in the water the 4.3 vortec motor was STILL!!!! PIPING HOT Im guessing this is because of the engine cover box with cushion and foam inside? is this the norm? I would have sweared that some one had just ran the boat. |

another question just found out the manifolds and risers were never replaced  whats the cheapest and best place to purchase new? what are signs of them going bad? i did notice under power the left bank runs hotter than the right, but i can still hold my hand on it. will it just lock up if they start to leak? are there any other signs? thks again.

Do you get up to temperature quickly? Does the boat run hot, or overheat? |

mad57 - First, welcome to the board. There are a ton of knowledgeable people here that are always happy to help. Second, it will be helpful for you to tell us what year, model, drive combo etc to help you diagnose your issues. Many folks put them in their signature line so its always an easy reference. |

Mad - Welcome to the Board. There are tons of knowledgeable people here and lots of information in old threads. Manifolds & Risers - My mechanic just told me mine need to be replaced. You can see some rust around the edges of them and they appear to be OEM. He said that rust on the outside means there probably is some on the inside. The parts are expensive, but everyone says its about a 3-4 hour job. I am still researching the best price (most come with the gaskets and bolts too) and the Volvo OEM are much more expensive and there are non-Volvo one's that my mechanic said will work just fine. Engine Temp - What was your gauge temp when running? I am wondering if your impeller needs to be replaced (and maybe your engine temperature alarm if it was not sounding). I have the engine cover and the insulation under it is to keep the sound of the engine from being too loud. As the others said, go to your User Control and put your year and model and engine and stern drive info in your signature. |

Need more information, what year motor is this, fresh or salt water? A cast iron engine will hold heat for quite a while, esp with that small engine box around it... What temp is it running at? Most later model engines use a 160 thermostat which you would see temps of 160-175 or so under normal conditions, it may spike up to 180 when you come off plane but should run under 180. I use an IR heat gun to check temps, my newly installed manifolds run at 115 or so after a slow idle run to a high of 135 after running on plane...the intake manifold right under the thermo housing usually is at 155-165 which is what it should be with a 160 stat... |

@LouC - mine seems to run around 180 when at full temp. Think that is ok? If not, what might be the culprint. (Not trying to jack the thread, but just raised a question). |

And .... if your risers are partially plugged, this would create higher temps in the engine box, due to the hotter risers. |

More than likely its the manifolds/risers starting to get clogged, after you replace em you should see improvement. Raw water has to get in (impeller and circ pump) and it has to get out (thermostat, manis/risers) anything that gets in the way of raw water flow will make you run hot... The spec on my OMC stat is it starts to open at 160, is fully open at about 180, but in my experience, this engine runs from about 165-170, when coming off plane, it will heat up to about 175-180 and then cool down. This is with a new impeller, new stat, new circ pump, new mani/riser units (OMC Batwings) and new hoses. Engine is an original raw water cooled 4.3 from '88 so probably a bit of rust inside  ....next engine will be closed cooled for sure...after you replace the manis/risers, get an IR heat checking gun from radio shack, and keep tabs on your normal temps, then when they start to get a bit hot, you will know it's time to check em again. In Fla salt water that could be as short as 3 years, mine were just starting to clog here in Long Island with only a 6 month season after 5.5 years.... |

Hi guys thanks for the advice and the welcome good to be here, its a 1997 horizon rs with a 4.3 vortec mated to a volo pen outdrive, the temp i was refuring to was after the motor was shut off and about maybe 2 hours later still really hot under covered engine box i really though some one at the marina started it:) while running( only had it one day so far) it runs at 150/160 at idle and slightly more on plane most i saw was 175/180 and its hot here this week, there is some slight rust around the pipes but i read here that ,that can happen if salt water comes in over the back and drips down on to motor, also ive read about losing starters from this as well, i well aware im going to have to replace the man/risers but would like to not do it today and maybe get the next month out of them and save for the spring the new ones. |

If you put your hand on the risers, they should be very warm but not scalding hot. Lou's recomendation of keeping track with an infrared heat gun is a good one. Especially for salt water boaters. |

Yes i can hold my hand on them while running at idle the right bank is slightly hotter the left is super cool, took it out for a good run yesterday and at 3800 rpm nice cruising speed dead on 150 temp, slightly faster about 4200 rpm around 160 so i think she running dead on. |
