Took my 2006 Horizon 19O, out on the lake today, just recently purchased it used, has 65 hours on it now, its fuel injected, boat is clean and engine looks clean, In the past 2 months i have taken it out 5 times with no problems,

But when i got out of the wake zone today and opened it up i got up to 30mph and all of the sudden with out touching the throttle the speed dropped to about 20, and then when I had it full throttle top speed was only 22 mph with only 2 people in the boat. after that disconnected the battery to reset comp, no change and now it sputters and the idle sounds a little rough, and runs horrible when trying to gain speed. Still top speed is 22mph.

The RPM doesnt race, the Prop is fine and tight. the spark plug wires are on tight. The shift cables look like its working properly.

Any Suggestions. bad gas? bad fuel filter? please?

Thanks

My first thought is it being a fuel issue. I would start with a new fuel filter and see if there is any water in the filter.

+1 - bad gas and blocked filter are the hot candidates, then maybe the anti-siphon valve on the tank. As an outside chance, it could be a fuel pump...

Not sure if your fuel filter is in the same location, but it is easy to change out. Pour the contents in a glass jar and you can see the water and fuel separation easily.

Also, make sure you fill the new filter with fuel before installing.

Ethanol eats another fuel pump (well, not yet)! Start with the fuel filter because I had the same issues when our club experimented with ethanol (low rpms, rough idle, sputtering). I went through 3 sets of fuel filters that year. Within two years of this disasterous experiment, I ended up having to replace both my fuel pumps. Right before your fuel pump goes bad, you will see a significant reduction in rpms and rough idling but no sputtering because you will have quit putting that crap in your tanks (at least this was my last experience 2 weeks ago). Thanks Al.
