Post subject:  Hairline Cracks in Transom

I have a '05 200 Horizon. While winterizing I noticed 2 hairline cracks in the transom extending away from the drive about 4 inches. They are visible and I can feel them when I rub my hand across them but I can't get them to show up in a picture ( I need a better camera). They appear to only be in the gelcoat. Is this common? Do I need to worry? Thanks

Yes, this is common. But if it was me, take a rule and put it up the the cracks and take a pic of it. From time to time, check it to see if it got wider. I some times fill them in depending on were and with what.

I discovered a whole series of "gelcoat cracks" all along the bottom of my transom at the beginning of the 2nd year (they were hard to see, as you described, and so they may have been there all along). They were in the transition area between the transom and the bottom of the hull. The dealer filled them with grease pencil so they'd show up better in pictures, then sent pictures to FW. At this point the boat was still (barely) within the gel coat warranty so FW paid the dealer to repair them. Their conclusion was that they weren't "cracks" but were actually "mold marks." They sure looked like cracks to me, but none of them have returned since the repair was done.

How do you fill them in?

Not to take away from the above post. If it was on the outside of the boat I would do it the right way.

I had a few of them in the engine compartment from were they bolted down the fire extinguisher in my last boat. I used 5200 to fill it in, the color was not perfect, but a lot better than the black lines from the cracks. To me, I just wanted to seal it, it did look better, and its the engine compartment, no big deal. So to me, it depends on were to what I am going to use.
