I have a 2006 180 Horizon with a 3.0 merc. The last couple of times i have took it out, the temp gauge has been acting erratic and sounding the alarm. It starts off fine but after an hour or so it starts doing this. Any help you guys have is greatly appreciated! |

The first thing I would look at is the impeller. |

The other thing is using an IR laser temp gun to verify what the temp gauge is telling you. Take a reading at the base of the intake manifold where the thermo housing bolts to it with the engine at running temps, and when the gauge acts up. Normal temps should be between 155-165 or so. If indeed it's higher than that and follows the gauge reading, then checking the impeller, thermostat and exhaust risers/manifold for clogging is the usual overheat trouble shooting process. If on the other hand, the temp you get with the IR laser gun is normal and the gauge shows overheating, then you have a sending unit/gauge/wiring issue. If you are going to work on your own boat, an IR laser temp gun (you can buy them at Radio Shack) is one of the best diagnostic tools you can have for checking overheat issues. |
