Hello, I'm new to the site... Here's my problem when going into the dock and I try to shift into reverse it will disingage then jerk the boat when it ingages its really hard to come into the dock in a smooth manner. A buddy was saying that it is because there is something in the shift cables that is not lined up correctly. He says it is a simple fix. Any ideas what the problem is? |

Is your drive a Volvo or Merc? Shift cables on the Volvos are a known problem. The factory cable is pretty ordinary quality, is often stiff, and most people replace it with a Teleflex Xtreme cable. I know from personal experience that this is a huge improvement. You can adjust the cable when you replace it - not difficult at all. There are lots of posts on the website. |

It is a Volvo. I will add that to my Sig. Is there any thing that needs to be adjusted to make the shifting into reverse smother? |

The adjustment is under the cover on the outdrive ( 3 bolts holding it on). The shift cable needs to be adjusted so that with the shifter and outdrive both in the neutral position, the pin on the brass "cube nut" attaching the cable to the actuator is mid-point in the actuator slot. This will ensure the cable has the same "throw" for both forward and reverse selection. ( you'll gave to take a split pin/ washer out, possibly also a small nut to adjust the cube nuts position on the threaded end of the shifter cable, use waterproof grease on reassembly) Graham |
