The stupid discount auto parts store power steering pump I got is going bad already, go figure. I know that 3.0 VP's also came without power steering, what's needed or how do I take the pump out of the situation belt wise? The belt that drives the pump also turns the engine circulation pump and pulley that runs everything else. How is a belt routed in non PS engines?

Don't lose the functionality. This is one of the times that spending more for a NEW, not a refurb cheapo is worth the money and saving the hassle.

Replace it with OEM as you should have to begin with.

Proof in fact?
Volvo Penta Power Steering Pump:

$265

Chevy Power steering pump, minus the tank (not needed, reuse old one)
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/ ... 17_0_3508_
$48

Where does the extra $200 come from??? Nowhere. Just price inflation cause it's for a boat.

changing pumps is worthless (its under warranty). The hoses are not connected to the rack because that leaks and I've been without power steering for 6 months. No big deal. If I ever decide to replace the $700 rack I'll hook the belt back up to the pump but right now I want it bypassed all together.

Go onto http://www.dougrussell.com and look up Volvo parts and see the differences between the ps/non ps models. There must be a difference in the belt, or an added idler pulley....

here it looks like they all came with PS.....

Here's a link to the drive/transom/steering parts....

It's worth noting that the power steering is not only necessary to help turn the outdrive, it's important in helping the drive hold it's position. If you were in a tight turn and happened to let loose of the wheel, the power steering provides resistance to avoid having the drive snap back into straight position, thus possibly preventing you from throwing people from your boat....don't take this the wrong way, as I originally complained about my steering being too stiff on my H190.

What year is your boat?

In regards to automotive VS marine parts some stuff there really is no different but some stuff there is, and its a big difference (water pumps, starters, alternators, fuel pumps, etc.). Without getting into that I would not go with a reman PS pump for anything ever, had to many issues with them over the years. Always go with new on those.

I do usually go with OE stuff if I can, but I have had good luck with Sierra parts such as starters and water pumps. ReMans are a crap shoot, they can be good, but often are not. My boat still has the OE p/s pump and steering cylinder, it's 24 years old. I just grease the cylinder and the piston once a season.
I usually go ask the mechanics at the shop I sometimes use, what are good after market parts, if the OE is not available or too expensive. They know what works and what doesn't.
