I bought a 1996 Four Winns Horizon 190 with a 5.0 FI 220Hp Volvo Penta with the SX Cobra outdrive. Any opions? Is this a good outdrive? Any issues with it?

I have the SX and haven't experienced any problems. Seems to be a solid drive as compared to the old OMC I used to have. My boat had the 5.0 and I swapped it out with a 5.8 and the drive is still holding strong.

I have the same drive in my '97. It was later just called the V-P SX drive after OMC went out of business. It is the basis for the current V-P drives, a good design, the cone clutch is pretty smooth compared to the dog clutch used in the Merc Alpha.

I won't get into V-P or Merc being better than the other, there's been plenty of that in other threads :D

If you take care of it, it will take care of you. It's the same outdrive as sold on 2012 boats with an SX.

They are fantastic drives, very very few issues with them. A standard SX drive is good to 400HP. The gears are all manufactured overseas where they can be hardened using methods that are not allowed here, they are nearly twice as hard as a merc alpha gear.

Our 1995 5.0 EFI OMC/Volvo SX drive in a FW 190 Horizon has delivered more than 2000 hours of trouble free service. I had enough confidence in it that I sold the boat to my brother. The only issue I had was the driveshaft bellows developed a hole where it touched the hose clamp screw and allowed water in.
