I'm having a grounding issue that started this weekend boating that I need to fix this week. Alternator voltage goes from 12v to 14v, radio won't keep the time, and the gauges will randomly bounce especially when I hit the engine trim. I checked the ground wire at the battery and that was okay. Is the only engine ground the black battery cable? I guess I have to trace wherever that goes and clean it up

Just follow the ground cable back to the engine, on the V6/V8s it is a stud on the bellhousing, I bet the 4 cyl is similar.

Cleaned all grounds, gauge didn't move. 11v boat off, 12.5 boat on... so out of a whim I busted out the multimeter...

12.6 off, 14.1v on. Stupid VDO gauges. At least they're the 2" replaceable kind.

My volt meter reads low too. But the OE gauges are original, and I'm sure there is some salt water corrosion up under the instrument panel. Funny thing though the temp gauge agrees within 5* of the IR Temp gun.

All my gauges are off, I usually just tap them to get a more favorable number but I didn't think a voltage gauge would lie that bad. I'm thinking about taking a cruise later this month for my birthday so gauges gotta wait. Cheap though, whole Faria set is under $200 shipped.
