Thought I would post some pics and give the rundown on weekend project. I had some pretty bad oxidation on my boat above the rubrails, and some scratches on the hull below. I had tried last year to remove it myself with no luck. I got several quotes from places to have it done and have the scratches buffed out and they were all close to $500. I decided to give it a try myself on more time before shelling out that kind of cash. Here is how it went.

Rented a 9" orbital polisher/ buffer. First I buffed the entire boat with Megellan's Oxidation remover (Medium). It was pretty gritty and was little nervous at first but long as I kept the buffer moving it was safe. I could see how it could cause damage if you allowed it to sit in one place. I had to go over the worst spots more than once. Next I had waxed the boat with Bass Pro Shops Color restorer Cleaner Wax with PTEF. Finally I came back and used Bass Pro Boat Polish with PTEF. I appliced by hand and removed with a small palm sized orbital buffer. It took me a total of about 5 hours, but I couldn't be happier.

If someone can tell me how to post pics I will post a couple.

That's a nice boat, too bad it was allowed to get into that condition. Nice job. That upper tape isn't too expensive from FW (at least it didn't used to be).

Keep a good coat of UV blocking wax on it, and you won't have to go through that again.

fourwinnsjay, that looks great! I love a nice red that is well taken-care of. +1 on that UV-blocking wax.

that looks great, I had the same problem with my '88, no amount of buffing would bring it back, finally had to get it painted, it's in the shop now.
Next boat will be white only

Excellent work! I've got some dull areas on my H250. You've inspired me.

the upper tape on mine already has a few nicks... how easy is it to line up correctly when applying it? I would imagine if you are off even a little it will be very noticeable in places

The upper tape does have to be applied very carefully if you're just doing little pieces. I would even say little pieces will stick out no matter how careful you are. If you're doing the whole deck, or a large sections of it, it's not quite as critical.
