I use lysol mold and mildew in the purple bottle on my vinyl when it needs it. 12 years old and it looks brand new. It has bleach, so once you're done cleaning with it... rinse and re-wash the vinyl really good with a mild car wash soap and once dry apply a good UV protectant like 303.

That's a very good question! I am not sure though.. all I can guess is from some chemical or item of clothing or oil or something that was put on the seat. It is very odd as it was under cover. The only things that happened in the 3 week period between it not being there, and appearing, was that my co-owner used it, and we had someone on the boat who was putting in a new alternator.

Very odd (and very annoying as it's hideous and looks well set in). It almost looks like battery acid or something.. (I hope just looks!)

Magic eraser or oxyclean with a brush....once clean then hit with vinyl treatment......don't use anything with bleach ever on vinyl...doesn't matter how you wash it or treat it...the stitching in the seats soaks up the bleach and it will eventually rot them out.

black dots AKA spider poop AKA mold laughs at Oxyclean/Melamine foam. You can scrub til you wear through the vinyl with those cleaners and the spots will still be there.

I had similar stains last year after removing my snap on covers. The best thing I found was to set the boat out in the bright sun for a day or two and lightly sponge the area with clorox. The sun really did help.
The stains faded and are barely visible but there is still some very light grey areas where it was. I think mine was some form of mold that got into the vinyl.
I tried everything and the only thing that seemed to work was a bit of chlorine. Be sure to clean it off afterwards and use a vinyl protectant.
Just my 0.02
Rob

Thanks fellas. I'm in australia and not sure we can get Oxiclean over here, but is it the hydrogen peroxide that is the active cleaning chemical? If so, I came across this thread for a DIY mixture..

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/sho ... hp?p=41584

I also like the sound of the Clorox product and a soft sponge and a bit of natural UV. Makes sense to me.
When you say Clorox, would this do it? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Clorox-Bleac ... _519wt_905

Or do I need the liquid bottles (that would cost $70 just in shipping to Australia!)? Maybe a homemade concoction route..

Just plain old household bleach. That would be a 5% solution.
You can get pool chlorine as well and it is 10% solution.
Nothing fancy.

Go it...that's from the bottom of the mechanics rusty red oily bottomed metal toolbox that he sat on the seat while working on the boat!!! If so you got rust, faded paint and oil......how bout a SOS pad....steal wool for the rust and paint and soap for the oil.......I would try it on a neighbors boat first though 8)

I was told bout the no bleech by an upholstery guy....but then again I wouldn't care about stitch rot in that area cuz that stain has to go...just don't make a habit of the bleech I recon...but hey if it works.
