Drain Plug

So I brought my boat home and I have a peat peave. The drain plug is copper 3/4 square. So all you boaters out there.. you have to have some tips on where to put it, Tie it or something.. Most of the time I cant find my keys, cell phone or wallet. I know that it will go missing and will probably go through 5+ this summer....

Any tips???

I have them in 3 locations..... One in the cup holder next to thr cockpit.... One spare in tool box on boat compartment and another back up one in our truck side pocket.... :roll:

I was hoping to some how drill a hole through the top and maybe attach it with a wire or a small chain.....just seems like a flawed system...I do like the plastic ones with the "T" so they don't fall out...

I always place and remove it from the tool box on board. The same place I keep the crescent wrench to put it on and take it off. You definitely want it somewhere you don't forget to put it in!

I guess that is one things that I should have is a small tool box with some spare stuff... What else would be good to keep on hand?

Mine has a hole drilled in it, and is attached via lanyard to the oil drain hose/plug. Thus it is always attached to the boat.

One of my mechanics put it in a plastic baggie and stuck the ignition key through it in the dash. Of course that was for winterization, but would work all the time too. Only problem would be remembering to put it in before you put the boat in the water.

I have a magnetic plug wrench that lives attached to my trailer. The plug itself I store in the side pocket on the driver door in my truck and the spare plug is in my tool kit on the boat.

I usually only take it out for the winter. When I do I put it in a baggie and tape it to the steering wheel so I dont forget it. (being careful to tape around the plastic and not to the wheel itself. 5 month old tape is a pain to get off!

Cupholder for me. I keep it on the passenger side so it is near the glove compartment where my crescent wrench is. It is always the second thing I ask my wife for (I put her in the boat for launch since she can't back up a trailer) after she puts the blower on.

I have a hook that looks like a key hole, it can open & close. I just don't know what its called. I take the plug and put it on the hook and hook it t the steering wheel. So I always know were it is & I can't forget to put it in before the boat goes in.

+1 On those locations!!! I also keep the plastic gasoline key and the keys to my boat and the keys of my locks on my tires and trailer on my key chain so if I feel the need to pick my boat up after work like I will be doing in approximately 23 minutes and counting I don't have to go back home and pick all those items up. Great just got offered hospital overtime I am definitely not passing that one up boat stays at the storage once again :evil:

i also use the baggie trick. soon as the boat comes out and i pull the plug i put it in the bag and put the key through the bag into the ignition.

the only time this has failed me is when i went out with just my son and myself. he was 7 at the time i launch by just using ropes and tying it up. lucky for me the little man said daddy why is this doing this!!! the bilge was gushing water out. luckily i hadn't taken the bow tie off yet so pulled her out and put the plug in lol. little man saved me a real big mess.
