Once in a while, the speedometer will just stay at zero. Once the engine is turned off and restarted, it starts to function again. I can't figure out what would cause this.....

Also, where is the wire or sensor located?

Thanks!

The speed sensor is on the stern of the boat - a little black plastic fold down leg called a pitot. The pressure of driving the boat throught the water forces air up the pitot tube to the speedo. So the speedo is really just a mechanical device measuring pressure!

These are notoriously poor and inaccurate at low speeds (if they work at all), and are easily blocked causing the speedo to read zero. So make sure the pitot on the stern of the boat is clear and free from any debris.

Most people just use a GPS for measuring speed these days.

The plastic tubing that runs from the transom to the speedometer could also be partially kinked. You can unplug the pressure line from the back of the speedometer and try blowing through it. The line should be open all the way to the part that hangs down below the boat. Someone at the factory severely bent my speedometer tube during construction and I had to fix it.

Yup... horibly inaccurate, even when they work well. I was fortunate on my last boat... read good, and responsive compared to GPS. I got rid of the mechanical speedo on the FW with Perfect Pass. Look around... someone posted a few places to get a GPS speedo that replaces the in-dash nicely. I know PP has one, and a few others. Maybe about $300, but IMO, worth it!
