Hey guys was wondering what speed I should get out of my 180 with 5.7 go with 4 adults and 35 gallons of fuel and cooler and gear. I got 41 was wandering how much all the extra weight effects the speed. Sorry it's my first boat :D

You should get more than 41mph out of that little rocket.

For comparison, our 20ft. bowrider with 5.0L engine tops out at 54 mph with 4 adults, and full tank.

What prop do you have on there? You might be propped for the hole shot to pop skiiers up but that would affect your top speed. But I would think that an 18' with a 5.7 should leap out of the hole regardless....

top speed of that boat with the stock prop 14 1/4 x 23 is 50mph virtually empty. It's much lower HP then a more recent 5.7. It's actually equal power wise to a fuel injected 4.3 v6.

35 gallons of gas = 210lb.
Cooler/gear? 100lb
4 adults? 700lb.

So you're adding nearly 1000lb of weight. 41 isn't bad, i would have figured maybe 43-45 tops with that weight. I would check what prop you have. It might be dinged up or bent too.

My 2000 H180 with a 3.0 does 41mph with 10 gallons of gas and just me since I changed props. 4 adults, gear, gas, etc? Mid low 30s. Cruise is like 25mph. Not fast, but fuel consumption is half of what your V8 is.

I'd check the prop & go from there. Should be faster than that. Might need some tune up work.

Ya that was the first time we had it out this year and wasn't sure I think the prop is a 14 1/2 x 21 but I will check and see. Will get back with you all. Thanks.

Ya I forgot to check that I was all wrapped up in cruising around the lake. Cheesin. Lol we putted around mostly at 20 - 23. She gets up on plane fast. Also I am learning trim adjustment . I hear that will help as well. I will get back to you thanks. :D

I was just reading another topic and realized my prop has some knicks and dings in it. Wondering if this could be the problem?

That sounds low to me too. I had the 5.7 in a H220. I seem to recall that engine has several horsepower designations and mine was the highest available but I know I got something like 52 in mine. It was fast enough that the boat didn't feel comfortable. The boat just didn't have a stable feel to it above 50. Might have just been my boat.

Our 180 Rx ad a 4.3... At sea level lakes we were pulling 47 mph...

Are you also using the trim - and trimming with speed?

I had the same engine setup in a 2050SS Bayliner....a little bigger boat but weight not so far apart.....I believe that motor should be rated at 260hp depending on what Carb u have. I would expect around 45 to 47 with that payload. First is that 41 from GPS or speedo? Prop condition and pitch? Trim it out and weight distribution....elevation and how fuel system is jetted? Wind and wave action are all factors.

I'm slowly learning how to use the trim. 41 was with all adults in back of boat. Trimm all the way down. Water was fairly calm. The boat papers say its 225 hp. It's got the holly 2 barel. Can some one explain to me proper trimming. Thanks all. This is why boaters are awesome. Good people. :D. Ohh and it was gps reading off iPhone. Actual boat speedo read 35. Also thought about getting a new prop. Will check on what size prop I'm running.

First, you want to learn to trim by feel and sound, not a gauge.

When you are on plane, trim up, one second at a time. Listen to the engine, pay attention to the way the prop spits water and changes with more or less trim. When you reach the point that the prop is cavitating (loosing traction, you will be able to hear the engine revs), trim it back down a hair. Also, you will notice your boat porpoising, meaning the bow is going up and down in smooth water. This is also an indication of too much trim.

Take your time learning this but remember, learn by feel and sound, not the gauge.
