So today was the first outing of the summer. Backed the boat off the trailer with no problems. After the next stop, I noticed there was no neutral when
I started the boat. Just idle speed. And when I tried reverse, the boat shifted into forward. I'm hoping this will just be some adjustment on the cable
but I have never had experience with anything like this. Sure made getting her back on the trailer much more difficult. Any ideas before I start searching
for a mechanic? '98 170 w/ volvo 3.0 and sx drive. Thanks.

I'd also check whether the clamp holding the outer cable hasn't come loose.

Plus, I can't remember whether it was here or on another forum, but on someones SX drive the hole in the shift actuator lever had worn through and the shift rod wasn't connected to anything anymore.

Is the clamp also under the outdrive cover? I don't know anything about the drive sys or controls. Thanks.

Thanks for the pics, very helpfull. I was also reading last night about other people with similar issues and many mentioned that trash or build up of
contaminents had caused the problem. I backed off the trailer fine and then had to beach the boat to load the family since the water level is so low
that the courtesy dock was not useable. When I backed out of there it was extremely mucky water so I bet that might have caused the problem.
I will get back to where I store the boat in a few days and pull the cover to explore.
