Hi folks,

I am a long-time Four Winns owner and have been very happy with my 1993 Horizon 230. I recently decided to trade up to a 2012 model. I went for a ride yesterday in the 2012 230 and was very happy with the boat .... but it had a stainless steel dual prop .... which seems to cause vibration when putting the boat in reverse. The dealer told me that this would calm down after some break-in period and assured me that all boats with the dual prop experience this vibration.

Any thoughts on the dual prop? Thanks.

Dave

I don't get any vibration going into reverse, or in reverse.

Never heard of such a thing with the DP. Especially on a new boat.

There is no such thing as a "normal" vibration. I'd pass on that one..

You did not mention the type of drive. I have had both Mercs & Volvos with the dual props. Nerver had any vibrations in rev.

I would be really upset over this. This tells me that a bearing or gear in the drive is bad or not installed right. The drives are big bucks. Two years from now, you don't want this to come back too you. In the form of, breaking down, lost time, money................

I would ask that a new lower unit be installed! Thats if you did buy the boat as new.

Thanks folks ... actually the boat I ordered is being built at the factory ..... I took a test drive in a similar boat at the marina. But the sales guy told me that all dual props have this vibration. btw engine is a 5.0 GXI SX Volvo Penta.

Hmmm, something strange here. The 5.0 GXI is the Volvo Engine, but the "SX" drive is not a duo prop.

SX Single prop Volvo Penta. The SX drive is the best single propeller alternative in the market. The wide rudder area gives precise handling - especially important for close quarters manoeuvrering.

Boat engine : 4 stroke in-board petrol engine 200 - 300 hp (stern-drive)
5.0GXIE (270 hp @ 5000 rpm) Volvo Penta.
A genuine gasoline V-8 for performance motorboats. With 5.0-liter displacement and eight cylinders, this engine delivers loads of torque and power across the entire speed range. The advanced fuel-injection system is a perfect match for the SX single-propeller drive or the Duoprop twin-propeller drive.

I have a 2006 H240 with the 5.7 Volvo Penta DP bought new in 2007 spring; never had any vibration in reverse when brand new nor now with 350 hours on it. It has been a great engine and out drive, no problems at all with it.

It should not have any vibration when you shift to reverse..... 230 with 5.0? If you are ordering the boat you might want to consider to go with 5.7 and DP....... You might feel underpowered when you load 5 + people...... I would absolutely would not get a 230 with single prop 5.0........ my 2C

Flying Sushi took the words out of my mouth. H230 w/ 5.0 SX is not for me. H230 w/ 5.0 DP, maybe at best.

If the boat you test drove had a DP, but you are ordering a boat with an SX, then I think you've been taken for a ride (literally & figuratively). You should really test drive that boat with the power package you are ordering to see if it's right for you.
