Hello everyone.....been on a good stretch lately and haven't had to fix anything in a while.

Anyone had issue with the trim up not working intermittently? Never had it happen on trim down. It has happened both when running and at idle.

2000 Horizon 180 4.3 GL with Volvo SX outdrive. I have replaced both trim cylinders in the last 12 months so the hydraulic circuit has been opened if contamination is a potential cause.

thanks.

Could be a relay issue. Its the first thing I can think of if only working in one direction. Try trimming up and have someone check to hear the relay click. If you don't hear the relay click over it is most likely the culprit. If you do hear the relay click and the trim is still not going up then I would check electrical connections starting from the relay socket, working back to the helm switch, and finally over to the main power.

Pretty common to have to replace the relays on that V/P trim setup.

Same here - It actually happened to me on the 4th - and it had just been working moments before! I gave the trim pump motor a little love with a hammer, pulled and reseated the relays and the fuse. Problem "solved" (until the next time)....

Anyone have a picture of the trim motor?

Not handy, but on mine it is the engine compartment on the port side pretty much right up agains the transom. You should see the fluid reservoir right there also. On later models I understand the pump is integrated into the outdrive.

I have a 1999 Horizon 190 with a 5.0 GL, and I was having the same issue. Turned out there was a wire harness (connector) that was loose. Put a a little tape around the connector and hasn't ever come back. I just happened to find it by chance.

Typically, yes. It should be mounted vertically if memory serves. The relays on mine are 2 black cubes on the top of the assembly that pull out vertically.

On mine they are the front part of the assembly (on the same bracket, but in front of the trim pump)

The pump should sit right on top of the reservoir like this:

Note that both relays need to be in for the system to work (so you can't pull a single relay to diagnose).

I think this is the wiring schematic I used when diagnosing m trim problem (ended up being a sporadically functional relay in the engine bay for me)

What model boat do you have Sanmiam?

I know where my reservoir is and there is no Pump on top, so I am thinking some configurations might look a bit different. Will look tomorrow and post a picture from mine if i can locate it.

Thanks everyone. My system looks just like picture above.

Any recommendations on pulling the relays? The female receiver of relays is a very fimsey plastic bracket. Was thinking of uplugging the battery and trying to pry the relays off or grabbing relay with vice grips. Should it be that secure? It is 12 years old.

On my 2001 H180 3.0VP, the trim pump seal leaked and allowed fluid into the trim motor.

(Sarcasm on) That wasn't too expensive. (Sarcasm off). At least the dealer had a good used assembly.
