I have a 2001 Horizon 200 with a 5.0 Volvo GL motor, and 19 pitch prop and can only hit 40mph with 4 people on board. Is this normal?

No. Should be right about 50 mph at WOT with that prop. What is your RPM at WOT ?

For reference, my boat is the same size and weight, also with 5.0L V8. It will do 54 mph with 4 people on board. RPM is 5,000 with 21 pitch prop.

How are you measuring you speed?

If you are using the speedo in the dash, double check that with a GPS before you start changing things.

How bigga four folks you got in that boat?......also, are you trimming it up a little once you get over the hump?

Speed is to be measured by GPS only. Also props are not the same, one 19 pitch could give you 40mph and another 19 pitch could give you 50... so if you can post up what you have bolted to the hub (brand).

I went from a 19 pitch stainless VP prop to a 21 pitch aluminum Solas and lost 2mph!

I'm sayin, so that's why we need to ask this guy what prop he has. Just pitch alone isn't a determining factor of what speed it should be going.

I have only checked the speed on the speedo so far. I will check it with my GPS tomorrow on the river. The 4 people are pretty normal sized people maybe 600 pounds between the four of us. I am also running a 14.25 X 19 A4R PROPELLER QL by Volvo Penta. I know it's a four blade propeller(I wanted a better whole shot), and though I knew I would lose some top end but I didn't think I would lose 8-10mph.

Thanks for all the feedback!!

My 190 will hit 56+ with 7 people on board, on the GPS/speedo, down side is I took out the prop last weekend time to detail the boat...until I buy a new prop.

I'm interested in what prop you were using. My 190 only hits 49-50 with 2 people on board at 4700 rpm

While I was on the river this past weekend with 3 people(500pds) we hit 44mph according to my GPS. This was with the trim up and going WOT. Does this seem normal?

I question this only because that unless GPS accounts for water current it will only display actual speed over ground SOG. In his case boating in a river may be inaccurate. I think it would be fair to say that pitot style speedometers are in general not as accurate as paddle wheel speedometers which can be calibrated.
So I would use both to judge speed in moving water, and not just GPS only.

Good point.

If you make a run down stream and turn around and go up stream, divide the difference in half and add it to the up stream run or subtract from the downstream run, seems like it should get you in the ballpark of SOG

The one I damaged was a 3-blade 14.25" - 21 pitch Black Max
