Yet another Prop Thread

OK so my 2003 H240 with a 5.7 Volvo SX has a 3 blade stainless prop. What would you do if you were me?

Thats the suggestion at the high end of the scale. Are you looking for a better hole shot, more top end? You didn't really specify

Ok so I have looked at the DUO conversion but that is too spendy for me. At this point I am looking to optimize my prop and do some bennett trim tabs.

What I am wondering is if a 4 blade prop will improve hole shot and ability to hold plane at lower speed and also give me a bit more top end? Is this an unreachable holy grail? Right not my boat is topping out at 42 MPH and I am not hitting the RPM it is rated for. FYI the engine is running really sweet and I just had it tuned and lubed, impeller, etc.

To be more specific my engine is volvo penta 5.7 GI SX 280HP. The bill of sale says "standard stainess prop".

What are your rpm's and prop now?
A 4-blade with a lower pitch will help with planing and hole shot
but probably won't improve top speed.
I don't know how fast that boat should be, but that seems a little slow.

We tested many prop when we owned a 2006 Horizon 240 with 5.7GiSX… We ended up with 4 blade Stainless Mercury Revolution 4 prop 21 pitch, 14-5/8 diameter. with hub for VP.. The prop gave us 46mph top speed with decent hole shut….. We felt very good until we test drive DP……..

+1 on the duoprop being expensive, started pricing a replacement pair to have on hand just in case jeez 1500 for the pair was way out of my ballpark so I thread lightly and treat those props like they are made out of gold!

You can always buy a used set, or a reworked set for a spare if you just need to get the boat back to the dock. You could also buy an aluminium set

I did a quick Craigslist search just in Florida. You can get VP Duo outdrives with props for under 2k. Sometimes they even come with a free boat.

There's few B3 SS prop sets for $200 and VP SS Duo sets for under $900 too

I was looking at this and getting a remanufactured swap kit was over 5K. If I could find one that is on a used boat or a wrecked boat for sal at 2K I might consider. So is this an easy swap?

Piece of cake, unbolt SX lower bolt on DP lower. Just for the sake of maintenance I would buy these new as the conversion site lists:
Intermediate Shaft, Bearing Retainer, Quad Ring, SX-C1, 2 0-Rings, Water Pickup Tube Grommet, Water Pickup Tube, Tube Retainer, Seal, Anode (w/ screws and washers).

Make sure you get one with the right gear ratio. They came on v6 engines too. I wouldn't pay 5k. Browse the craigslist and boat junkyards. I bet you could find one for 1500 with props.

OK so I finally got the measurements and info.

my current prop is a 3 Blade, 14 3/4 diameter, 19 Pitch Stainless Volvo.

At WOT I am getting 4400RPM and about 42MPH.

The engine is Volvo G5.7 Gi/SX 280HP. Can anyone tell me if my RPM's are low at WOT and if my top speed is low?

I'm sure there are other sites but the Mercury site has a prop selection calculator. Plug in RPM, weight etc. and it will give you an idea of where you stand.
